I tend to think of asparagus as a fancy, and fussy, vegetable. You know, the kind that only expensive restaurants serve.

That really isn’t true though. It is actually very simple to work with and cook. It is also delicious! We could all benefit from eating more of this hidden gem.

Substitutions:

  • Make a sweet sauce by adding a little brown sugar or maple syrup to the oil and seasonings.
  • Try a splash of soy sauce.
  • A sprinkle of kosher salt could be added, though I find that I don’t need it in combination with the salty bacon.
  • Top with parmesan cheese or chopped fresh herbs before serving.
  • Alternatively, you could drizzle asparagus with a balsamic glaze just before serving.
  • Try this seasoning mixture on brussel sprouts or broccoli. Slice up the bacon first before mixing it together with the brussel sprouts or broccoli.

Tips and tricks:

  • Try making this recipe in your air fryer or on the barbecue.
  • Trimming the asparagus is an important step that you don’t want to skip. The bottom of the asparagus spear has a very woody end. The easiest way to trim it off is by simply bending the spear until it snaps off.
  • If the asparagus is quite wet after washing, paper towels can be used to pat them dry. This will ensure that the seasonings stick to the asparagus nicely.
  • Try placing an oven-safe wire rack or cooling rack into your baking pan and laying the asparagus bundles on that. This will allow the hot grease from the bacon to drip down while everything cooks.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container.
