Now the fun part begins, decorating! This is a really fun and easy (I promise!) way to decorate cupcakes.
Let’s Decorate!
Ingredients:
- 6 Cupcake Ice Cream Cones (Already Frosted)
- 1 cup Buttercream Frosting
- 2 tsp Black Cocoa Powder
- Black Gel Food Coloring
- 6 Maraschino Cherries
- Sprinkles
Frosting Instructions:
- Open the cherries and pat them dry with a paper towel. Put them to the side for later.
2. Add 2 teaspoons of black cocoa powder to the buttercream. This will help the frosting turn black, while avoiding the bad aftertaste that can happen when too much food coloring is used.
3. Next, add 1-2 drops of black gel food color and mix until all the buttercream is black and there are no streaks.
4. Grab the piping bag and place your piping tip in the bag. Cut a hole in the end of the bag. Make sure the hole is large enough for the piping tip to fit half way through it.
5. Put the black buttercream in the bag and tie the end.
Round Cupcake Instructions:
- Begin by placing the Cupcake Cones on a flat surface.
2. Place the cherry on top of the cupcakes.
3. Trace around the mound of buttercream and the cherry with the black frosting.
4. Find the middle of the cone and, starting from the bottom of the mound, trace all the way over to the bottom on the other side. If the buttercream line happens to break, no problem. That will make it appear more cartoonish.
5. Next, go around the base of the mound with the black frosting. Go all the way around until you reach where you started. The easiest way to do this is to turn the cupcake with one hand while you squeeze the piping bag so you get a nice straight line. Allow there to be some gaps in the black frosting line as you go around.
6. Trace around the bottom edges of the buttercream. This time, we are going to be creating a wiggly line, but using the same turn and squeeze method from above.
7. Now add your sprinkles all over the cupcake and you’re done.
8. For some extra flair, you can put a dot of the white frosting on the cherry so it looks like it has a reflection line, as they do in cartoon drawings.
Swirl Cupcake Instructions:
- Use the black buttercream to trace each line of the swirl.
2. Add the sprinkles.
3. Serve and enjoy!
Tip: When tracing a swirl cone with multiple lines, use the black icing to trace around every other line in the swirls. Then continue using the same steps as for a regular swirled cupcake cone.
Tips & Tricks:
- If the cupcake frosting is too soft and becomes too difficult to decorate with, you can pop it in the freezer for 10 minutes to harden it up.
- If the buttercream is not turning black right away, allow it to sit, covered with a lid or cling wrap, for 10-15 minutes. This will allow the color to develop.
- These cupcakes can be stored in a cool, dry place in an airtight container for 4 days. Please remove the cherry and also note the black frosting and sprinkles may bleed into the white frosting.
