My little guys are starting Kindergarten in September. It’s something that I will probably be talking about a lot because both of my babies will be gone… all day… and we want to as prepared as possible.
Cameron and Isaiah turned five at the end of October last year. Because of where their birthday falls we had the choice of putting them in Kindergarten last September when they were four or waiting until this September when they will be five, turning six in October. We chose to give them an extra year at home for a number of reasons: to build our relationship and their attachment to us as parents, to give them more time to mature and develop social skills, to work on their school readiness and prepare them for the years ahead. Being twin boys who had never attended an all day, structured program {like daycare} and who are smaller in size than their peers, they were just not ready.
It was the best decision that we could have made in my opinion. After all, they can go to school the rest of their lives but they will only be our babies for so long. I have seen so much growth in each of them in the last six months that it just amazes me. They are both very different little individuals and I am excited to see how their personalities unfold in school.
With growth and school readiness comes boredom. They are always looking for new activities and games to challenge them. So we put these great little Preschool Activity Books together.
I found these duo tangs, pulled out a bunch of markers and pencil crayons and printed out a ton of worksheets. I went to First School for most of our printable worksheets. I printed writing practice sheets of the entire alphabet as well as thirteen printable mazes.
Cameron and Isaiah love to complete mazes. I organized the printables so that there were two alphabet worksheets then a maze worksheet. The boys need to complete two letters before moving on to the maze “reward”.
They helped me put the books together by hole punching the printable sheets and placing them into the duotangs. This gave them a great sense of ownership over their new Preschool Activity Books.
Similar books that I have bought in the past cost up to $20! These were free ~ other than the cost of printer ink.
They completed about a dozen sheets the very day that we made these books. Can you guess what their favorite colours are?
As a former kindergarten teacher, child development expert and current child therapist I applaud your decision to wait until August 2013 to have your boys start kindergarten! There are many fun non-worksheet activities on Pinterest. :)
