DOLLAR STORE FOAM DICE SCARECROW
Instructions:
1. Gather all of your supplies. Using the off-white acrylic craft paint, apply a base coat to the foam dice. Let it dry and apply a second coat, if necessary. The foam dice that I used required two coats of off-white acrylic paint.
2. With a ruler and scissors, measure and cut a section of raffia that is 8” long.
3. Tie a section of natural jute twine around the center of the 8” bundle of raffia, and secure with a knot.
4. Attach the raffia hair to the top center of the foam dice with a glue gun and glue sticks. Hold in place until glue cools. Glue down the raffia to the right and left sides of the foam dice.
5. Attach the mini burlap hat to the top front of the foam dice with a glue gun and glue sticks. Secure the front of the hat brim down to the scarecrow’s forehead.
6. Cut a small triangle from dark orange craft felt with scissors, and round the corners off. Attach the felt nose and two wiggly eyes to create the scarecrow’s face.
7. Add some cheeks by dipping a new pencil eraser into pink acrylic craft paint and stamping on the face.
8. To finish, draw on a smile from cheek to cheek with vertical stitches using a permanent black marker.
Tips and Tricks:
- Can’t find raffia? Grab an inexpensive grass hula skirt from your local Dollar Tree and use it instead.
- Mason jars make a great alternative to the foam dice in this craft. Attach the “hair” to the mason jar lid. Make a little family, using different sizes of jars.
- Your favorite thrift store is a great place to find inexpensive items to repurpose for all kinds of fun crafts.
- Shopping at your local dollar store is a great way to save money on seasonal decorations, serving platters, and fun activity and craft supplies. Even better, shop clearance sales at the end of the season and stock up for next year.
This adorable scarecrow, made with foam dice, is a great craft project for tweens and teens to create on their own, or with younger kids, in about 30 minutes.
It would also make a great addition to your fall decorations this year, whether indoors or on the front porch. Make one today!
