What is a hot chocolate bomb?
Hot chocolate bombs are a chocolate confection made hallow so that cocoa powder, marshmallows and other fun ingredients can be placed inside. When the bomb is placed in a hot drink like steamed milk or coffee, it bursts open and the ingredients are then mixed together to create a hot chocolate drink.
These hot chocolate bombs went through a LOT of recipe development! The key was having the hot chocolate bomb silicone molds and getting the temperature of the chocolate for drizzling just right.

Ingredients needed:
- 8 oz white candy melts
- 1 oz red candy melts
- 6 tablespoons hot cocoa powder mix
- 1/2 cup mini marshmallows
- Green sprinkles
Other supplies:
- Silicone semi-sphere molds
- Large plate
- Small plate
- Measuring cups
- Measuring spoons
- Spoon or pastry brush
- Pastry bag or freezer bag
- Small microwave safe bowls for melting candy
How to make Holiday Hot Chocolate Bombs:
1. Put a large plate into the freezer.
2. Pour the white candy melts into a bowl, and heat in the microwave for 30 second intervals, stirring well after each heat session, until the candy is fully melted.
3. Add a small spoon full of melted candy to all of the mold cavities, then coat the melted candy around the mold, making sure to get all the way up the sides. Place candy coated mold into the freezer for 5 minutes.
4. Repeat for a second coat of candy, then transfer the unused melted candy to a pastry or freezer bag.
5. Remove the chilled plate and candy coated mold from the freezer. Carefully remove each candy coated sphere from the mold and place on the chilled plate.
6. Fill half of a chocolate sphere with 1 Tbsp hot chocolate mix,
7. and a few mini marshmallows.
Now for the tricky part…
8. Heat the small plate in the microwave for 2 minutes.
9. Put one half chocolate sphere upside down on the heated plate to slightly melt the candy coated edge.
10. Adhere the two spheres together. The melted candy should fuse them together nicely, but if not, just use your finger to add a little chocolate around the seam.
11. Pour the red candy melts into a bowl, and heat in the microwave for 30 second intervals, stirring well after each heat session, until the candy is fully melted.
12. Place the melted chocolate into a freezer bag, then snip off the end and drizzle the red candy melts over each cocoa bomb. Tip: be sure that the melted candy is not too hot when drizzling otherwise it will melt right through your chocolate bomb.
13. Finally, top each bomb with green sprinkles.
14. To serve, place cocoa bomb into a mug, then pour 6 ounces of hot water or milk over the chocolate bomb. Stir well and enjoy!
Tips for making Holiday Hot Chocolate Bombs:
- Use the official hot chocolate bomb silicone molds, they make removing the hardened chocolate super easy!
- When in doubt, use more chocolate to coat the mold so that the wall of the bomb is thick to hold in the ingredients.
- Keep the chocolate in the freezer whenever possible as the bombs tend to melt easily.
- When drizzling the chocolate, be sure to have it warm, not hot otherwise it will melt through your chocolate bomb.
Some of my kitchen essentials:
- I love using this non-stick bakeware for all of my baking.
- These silicone mitts are perfect for grasping hot pans and baking dishes.
- This Henckel Knife is my favorite for slicing and dicing in the kitchen.
- These parchment paper bags are perfect for packaging and these large Rubbermaid food storage containers are great for storing baking in the freezer.
