Ingredients:
- 2 red apples
- 3 green apples
- 1 Tbsp lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 6 oz white chocolate melting wafers or chocolate chips
- 2 Tbsp festive sprinkles
- 2 Tbsp almonds, crushed
Supplies:
- Bamboo skewers or lollipop sticks
- Heart shaped cookie cutters
- Paper towels
Tip: we love to use honeycrisp apples or granny smith apples for their amazing flavour but any kind of large apples will work for this recipe.
Directions:
1. Cut the apples into slices about 1/4″ inch thick. Using a small heart shaped cookie cutter, cut out the middle of the apple slice.
2. In a small bowl combine a 1 cup of cold water, salt and lemon juice. Soak the apples in the lemon juice mixture, rinse and then place them on a paper towel to dry. Be sure that the apples are completely dry before moving to the next step.
3. In a medium microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate wafers in the microwave at 15 second increments, stirring in between until the chocolate is completely smooth. Tip: add red food coloring for a fun pink color if desired.
4. Skewer the apple slices with the bamboo. Dip apple slices into the melted chocolate and cover ins sprinkles or dip in crushed nuts.
5. Place the apple rings on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet or wire rack. A wire rack will allow for excess chocolate drip.
6. Place the candy apple sticks in the fridge and allow the chocolate to harden completely before serving.
These would be totally fun to create with the kids. Make a toppings bar full of delicious nuts, sprinkles, coconut flakes and gooey caramel for the kids to dip their apples in!
How can you keep the apple slices from turning brown?
It only takes a minute or two for the fresh cut apples to start to brown. Be sure to soak them in the lemon and salt water mixture before drying thoroughly and covering them in chocolate.
The apples can be soaked in the solution for up to ten minutes and should be rinsed completely with water before using. This will help to prevent the apples from browning.
