The best burger is one that is made from scratch, at home with lots of love. This mushroom Swiss burger recipe is one that the whole family is sure to enjoy!

It’s officially grilling season here so we’ve fired up the Traeger and have been enjoying the warmer weather.  Grilled hot dogs and hamburgers are at the top of the must make list to kick off our summer of BBQ!

Burger perfection starts with a few simple ingredients from the grocery store: lean ground beef, pork, an egg and spices. After many seasons of BBQ, we’ve combined these ingredients in a way that makes the best homemade burgers you’ve ever had!

Mushroom Swiss Burger Recipe

The entire family is sure to love this smoked burger recipe. These burgers are cooked low and slow on the smoker, locking in the juicy flavor!  

This is our preferred method of cooking hamburgers but if you don’t have a smoker, not to worry!  I’ve linked up our delicious homemade pattie recipe that is ideal for cooking on the grill of your barbecue too.

Making your own burger patties is actually super easy!  Let me show you how…

Hamburger pattie recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 cup homemade bbq sauce (or favorite BBQ Sauce)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup white onion, finely diced (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp hamburger seasoning (or Montreal steak spice)
  • 1 Tbsp garlic powder

Toppings:

  • 2 cups white fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 12 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 12 hamburger buns

*This homemade hamburger pattie recipe is also delicious and does not require a smoker.  We use these two pattie recipes interchangeably, depending on how much time we have.  

You could also use this delicious pattie recipe and simply cook the burgers at a higher temperature on your barbecue rather than smoking.  The possibilities are endless!

Directions:

1. Gather all of the ingredients.

2. In a large bowl combine ground meat.

3. Add onion, egg and seasonings.

4. Mix until well combined.

5. Use a kitchen scale to weigh out 5 oz balls from the meat mixture.

6. Form the balls into patties by hand or use a pattie press.

7. Place the patties on the smoker at 165 degrees F for two hours.

8. In a cast iron skillet, combine white mushrooms and butter.  Saute on medium heat until mushrooms are cooked (about 10 minutes).

9. Now place the patties on a grill preheated to 425 degrees F.

10. Cook for 8-10 minutes or until a meat thermometer inserted in the center reads 160 degrees F.

11. Flip half way through cooking and top each burger with a slice of Swiss cheese.

12. Serve each burger on a fresh hamburger bun with a generous serving of the sauteed mushrooms.

This easy recipe makes 12 juicy burgers.

Tips and tricks:

  • Create an all beef burger but omitting the pork and using ground beef instead.
  • Add additional onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper or kosher salt if desired.
  • Place patties in a single layer or between sheets of parchment paper for easy transporting.
  • Use your favorite burger seasoning instead of steak spice.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to five days.

How long do you cook hamburger patties?

  • Hamburgers can be cooked in a slow cooker on high for 5 hours or low for 7-9 hours.
  • Patties may be placed in an air fryer basket and cooked for 6-7 minutes at 350 degrees F.
  • Hamburger patties can be cooked on the gas grill grate or charcoal grill for 8-10 minutes.
  • Smoked hamburgers take 2 hours to cook when smoked at 165 degrees F.
  • Baked hamburgers in the oven take about 25 minutes at 350 degrees F.
  • In a large skillet, cook juicy burger patties on medium-high heat for 7-9 minutes.
  • Use a food thermometer to make sure that the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F.

Serve these on fresh pretzel buns and add your favorite condiments! A great burger is always made better with a side of french fries, sweet potato fries, pasta salad or potato chips.

These swiss mushroom burgers combine the mushroom mixture, melted swiss cheese and tender beef patties in a way that creates the perfect burger.  Who knew that you could make a delicious mushroom and swiss cheese, gourmet burger recipe at home?!

Topping suggestions:

  • Change up the cheese!  You could use cheddar cheese, mozzarella or provolone.
  • Top with crispy bacon, a fried egg, bell pepper or slice of red onion.
  • Add a slice of tomato, pickles or lettuce.
  • Caramelized onions would be a great addition to this amazing burger.  Simply add sautéed onion to the mushroom mixture. 
  • Top with 1 Tbsp of garlic butter to the center of each patty for even more flavor.
