This cast iron apple crisp is the perfect dessert for apple season but can easily be enjoyed any time of year.  The combination of tart apples and crisp topping makes this an easy apple dessert that will quickly become a family favorite!

What kind of apples should I use?

That really depends are your personal preference.  Granny smith apples will give you a more tart flavor while pink lady apples are naturally sweeter.  Honey crisp apples are the best apples, in my opinion, for most apple desserts.

Skillet Apple Crisp Ingredients

Skillet Apple Crisp:

Ingredients:

Apple Filling

  • 4 apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp all purpose flour

Crumble Topping

  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature

Toppings

  • Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Caramel Sauce

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit.

2. Place the apples in a large mixing bowl. 

3. Add all the apple filling ingredients including the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, and salt and flour.

4. Coat the apple slices in the dry ingredients and set aside. 

Note: as you make the crumble topping the apples and their juice will melt the ingredients together a bit more.

5. In a medium bowl mix the flour, salt and brown sugar together thoroughly.

6. Then use a fork to mix the softened butter and dry mixture until crumbly.

7. Place the apple filling in the cast iron pan, scraping all the extra juices and sugars from the bowl.

8. Top the layer of apples with the crumble mixture and cover all the apples.

9. Bake in the oven for 35 minutes or until the crumble topping has browned nicely.

10. Remove from the oven and top with a scoop of ice cream and drizzle caramel sauce.

This dish is best enjoyed while still warm.  Topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream with warm caramel sauce is my personal favorite!

  • Store leftovers in a bowl covered in plastic wrap or an airtight container.
  • You can use a baking dish to cook this easy recipe instead of the skillet.
  • Feel free to double the ingredients to make a deep dish apple crisp.
  • Be sure to use a well seasoned skillet to help prevent the filling from sticking.

  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/8 tsp salt
