In the past I taught a course for our local recreation department called Cupcake Creations where we covered all kinds of cupcake decorating techniques. During each class I shared recipes and tips for creating beautifully delicious cupcakes.
These patriotic cupcakes are created with layers of cake batter filling to create fun red, white and blue stripes. Topped with fluffy white frosting and festive sprinkles, they are sure to become a family favorite for summer time!
Make these Patriotic Cupcakes:
Ingredients:
- 1 box of Duncan Hines vanilla cake batter, prepared
- Red and blue food coloring
- 1 tub of Duncan Hines white frosting
- 1 Tbsp red, white and blue sprinkles
Directions:
1. Prepare and make the box cake mix batter in a large bowl as directed on the box.
2. Divide the batter equally into three small bowls.
3. Add blue food coloring to one small bowl and red food coloring to another separate bowl. Stir until a rich, dark color is reached.
Tip: add enough food coloring to create a vibrant cake batter color as the color will fade in the baking.
4. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit. Prepare a muffin tin with white cupcake liners.
5. Layer cupcake batter into the muffin cups. Drop 2 tablespoons of blue batter, 2 tablespoons of white batter and then 2 tablespoons of red batter into each cupcake liner.
6. Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean. Place cupcakes on a wire rack to cool.
7. Use a piping bag with a 1M star tip to frost each cupcake with icing.
8. Top with festive red white and blue sprinkles.
Patriotic cupcake options:
- Use blue icing, red velvet cake mix, red icing or chocolate cake mix for a fun dessert twist to these cupcakes.
- Homemade buttercream frosting, strawberry buttercream or cool whip could be used to frost each cupcake.
- Mini american flags would make the perfect addition to each frosted cupcake .
- A homemade cake recipe could be used rather that the boxed cake mix.
