What is a hot chocolate bomb?
Hot chocolate bombs are a chocolate confection made hallow so that cocoa powder, marshmallows and other fun ingredients can be placed inside. When the bomb is placed in a hot drink like steamed milk or coffee, it bursts open and the ingredients are then mixed together to create a hot chocolate drink.

Turtle Hot Chocolate Bombs Recipe:
Makes 6 hot cocoa bombs.

Ingredients needed:
- 7 oz milk chocolate melting wafers
- 6 tbsp hot cocoa powder (we like to use this homemade sugar-free hot chocolate mix)
- ¼ cup pecans
- 18-24 Kraft Caramel Bits
Other supplies:
- Silicone semi-sphere molds
- Large plate
- Small plate
- Measuring cups
- Measuring spoons
- Spoon or pastry brush
- Pastry bag or freezer bag
- Small microwave safe bowls for melting candy
How to make Turtle Hot Chocolate Bombs:
1. Put the pecans into a freezer bag and crush using a rolling pin or meat tenderizer.
2. Put a large plate into the freezer.
3. Pour the chocolate melting wafers into a bowl and heat in the microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring well after each heat session, until the chocolate is fully melted.
4. Add a small spoonful of melted chocolate to all of the mold cavities, then coat the melted chocolate around the mold, making sure to get all the way up the sides. Place chocolate coated mold into the freezer for 5 minutes.
5. Repeat for a second coat of candy, then transfer the unused melted chocolate to a pastry or freezer bag.
6. Remove the chilled plate and chocolate coated mold from the freezer. Carefully remove each chocolate coated sphere from the mold and place onto the chilled plate.
7. Fill half of a chocolate sphere with 1 Tbsp hot chocolate mix,
8. a few Kraft caramel bits and
9. 1 tsp crushed pecans.
Now for the tricky part…
10. Heat the small plate in the microwave for 2 minutes.
11. Put one half chocolate sphere upside down on the heated plate to slightly melt the chocolate coated edge.
12. Adhere the two spheres together. The melted candy should fuse them together nicely, but if not, just use your finger to add a little chocolate around the seam.
13. Reheat the bagged candy if needed, then snip off the end and drizzle chocolate over each cocoa bomb and add more crushed pecans. Tip: be sure that the melted chocolate is not too hot when drizzling otherwise it will melt right through your chocolate bomb.
14. To serve, place cocoa bomb into a mug, then pour 6 ounces of hot water or milk over the Turtle chocolate bomb. Stir well and enjoy!
Tips for making Turtle Hot Chocolate Bombs:
- Use the official hot chocolate bomb silicone molds, they make removing the hardened chocolate super easy!
- When in doubt, use more chocolate to coat the mold so that the wall of the bomb is thick to hold in the ingredients.
- Keep the chocolate in the freezer whenever possible as the bombs tend to melt easily.
- When drizzling the chocolate, be sure to have it warm, not hot otherwise it will melt through your chocolate bomb.
Some of my kitchen essentials:
- I love using this non-stick bakeware for all of my baking.
- These silicone mitts are perfect for grasping hot pans and baking dishes.
- This Henckel Knife is my favorite for slicing and dicing in the kitchen.
- These parchment paper bags are perfect for packaging and these large Rubbermaid food storage containers are great for storing baking in the freezer.
