Cut the fabric so that it is twice as long as it is wide. For a small pumpkin use a piece that is 4.5″ x 9″, for a medium pumpkin 6.5″ x 13″ and so on. Cut a piece of fabric for the stem that is about 2″ x 2″.
Fold the larger piece of fabric, right sides facing and sew the short sides together, creating a tube. Sew about 1/4″ from the edge and tie the thread in a know at the end.
Now loosely sew the bottom short edges together using a basting stitch. Pull the stitching to create a gathered bottom. Knot and tie off the thread.
Invert the fabric so that the right side is facing out and stuff with poly-fil.
Sew the top edge together using a running stitch and pull the stitch closed. Knot and tie off the thread.
Next thread about an arms length of yarn onto a yarn needle. You could also use embroidery floss instead of yarn.
Sew the yarn through the center of the pumpkin six times, looping it around the outside equally, pulling tight each time to create a pumpkin shape.
Double back the last stitch of yarn through the center of the pumpkin, tie each end of the yarn together and trim off any excess from the bottom of the pumpkin.
Sew the smaller piece of fabric into a stem, fill with stuffing and sew to the top of the pumpkin (not pictured).
