With Halloween just over a month away, it is time to break out the candy corn! Are you with me?! Candy corn is one of those holiday treats that can be a little hard to find out of season, so we like to take advantage while we can.
They are a huge hit with our family and make the perfect seasonal addition to today’s yummy candy corn popcorn recipe.
What are Popcorn Balls made of?
Traditional popcorn balls are made from a combination of corn syrup, butter, popcorn, confectioners’ sugar, and marshmallows. This crockpot recipe eliminates some of the work and helps to keep your popcorn balls from falling apart.
Supplies
- Crockpot – what I love about using the crockpot is that it has a huge capacity for mixing all of that popcorn and clean up is a breeze!
- Cupcake liners – perfect for individual servings and not having to roll balls.
- Large cookie scoop – a large spoon works too!
- Parchment paper or wax paper – for easy drop and go clean up.
- A large bowl – for mixing if needed.
- Airtight container – for leftovers!
Halloween parties are especially fun to create food for. When the boys were younger, there were class parties to bring Halloween treats to. Now that they are older, I still love making fun holiday-themed treats like this one for them.
Candy Corn Popcorn Balls
This perfect combination of salty popcorn and sweet candy is a fun, fall snack that is super easy to make. Wrap them up in individual cellophane bags and these candy corn popcorn balls make the perfect party favor too!
Ingredients
- Popcorn – whether homemade or store-bought, it’s the perfect crunchy base for this treat.
- Wilton white candy melts – these melt effortlessly to coat the popcorn in a smooth, sweet layer.
- White chocolate chips – a creamy, sweet alternative to candy melts, they blend perfectly into the mix.
- Salted peanuts – add a savory crunch that balances out all the sweetness in the balls.
- Mini marshmallows – soft and chewy, they bring a fun texture to every bite.
- Candy corn – a Halloween classic that adds a pop of sweetness and color.
- Halloween sprinkles – these colorful sprinkles give the balls a festive, spooky touch.
Instructions
1. Add the white chocolate melts, peanuts and chocolate chips to the crockpot.
2. Set to cook on low for 1 hour, stirring at the half an hour mark.
3. If you’re going with homemade popcorn, now’s the time to get popping. You can use an air popper, stovetop with some coconut oil, or even microwave popcorn—just be sure to avoid any buttery or overly salty varieties. You want plain or lightly salted popcorn here.
4. Stir the melted chocolate and peanuts together.
5. Add in popcorn, marshmallows and candy corn. Mix with a long handled spoon until all of the popcorn is coated in chocolate.
6. Add Halloween sprinkles and toss.
7. Grab your cookie scoop and drop large scoops of the coated popcorn into cupcake liners on a parchment-lined cookie sheet. This trick helps the popcorn balls stay in perfect shape without needing to roll them with your hands (less mess, more fun!).
8. Top each ball with an extra candy corn or two and pop them in the fridge for an hour to set.
Tips and Tricks
- Make sure you have removed any unpopped kernels before mixing in your popcorn. Nobody wants a cracked tooth!
- Instead of plain air-popped popcorn, try using microwave popcorn, or kettle corn.
- You can prepare the chocolate and peanuts in the microwave. Just make sure you are using a microwave-safe bowl to do it.
- If you don’t have a crockpot to mix everything in, simply put your popcorn into a large bowl and pour the melted chocolate and marshmallow mixture over the top of the popcorn, stirring well as you go.
- Wrap individual Halloween popcorn balls in parchment paper, wax paper, or plastic wrap to prevent them from sticking together.
- To help keep the mess contained, before you begin, prep a large baking sheet to hold the completed popcorn balls on.
- These popcorn balls can be stored at room temperature. Just keep them covered or in an airtight container.
- Try adding in white chocolate chips, M&Ms, or other white, yellow, and orange colors of candy to your candy corn popcorn mix. For some extra crunch, toss in some nuts or mini pretzels.
Not a fan of candy corn? No worries. Simply swap out the candy corn for your favorite candy! You could even throw in some different colored sprinkles.
