Variations

  • Use your favorite box of chocolate cake mix instead of making the cupcakes from scratch.
  • Substitute the chocolate cake and make vanilla Nutella cupcakes.
  • Add a fruit or Nutella filling. Use a cupcake corer, apple corer, or spoon to make a small hole in the center of each cupcake. Fill the hole with your desired cupcake filling, then frost and decorate as usual.
  • Top your cupcakes with fresh strawberries if desired.
  • Add cream cheese to the frosting.
  • Try a whipped cream frosting, instead of buttercream.
  • Turn this recipe into a cake.

Tips and Tricks

  • You can use an electric mixer or a stand mixer with a paddle attachment or whisk attachment for this recipe.
  • Feel free to use your own favorite chocolate cupcake recipe. Once the cupcakes are cool, continue with the recipe as written.
  • Do not attempt to add frosting to the cupcakes until they are fully cooled. Adding frosting to warm cakes and cupcakes can cause it to melt and not set as firmly as needed.
  • These cupcakes can be left at room temperature, covered, for up to 2-3 days, or stored in the refrigerator for up to 7 days, covered with plastic wrap or sealed in an airtight container.

Whether you whip up a batch of these yummy treats for World Nutella Day, serve them to your loved ones on Valentine’s Day, or make them just because, you are bound to receive rave reviews!
