Easy DIY Holiday Cracker Craft

This easy DIY holiday cracker craft is so fun for the festive season! Follow the step-by-step tutorial to make your own Christmas cracker.

DIY Holiday Cracker Craft

I have one last holiday craft to share with you today, DIY Christmas crackers. Christmas crackers are quite a common here in Canada, as well as places like the United Kingdom and Australia.

They usually contain small gifts, a silly joke, and a paper hat or crown to wear.

What I love about making my own homemade Christmas crackers is that I can add my own personalized touch and they are super fun for almost any occasion! So if you don’t have time to make them for Christmas, why not New Year’s Eve??

Too busy to make this right away? Pin it for later! Pin this post to your favorite board on Pinterest and it will be there when you’re ready!

They would make a great birthday party favor too! Fun, right? Okay, here is how to create your very own DIY holiday Christmas cracker.

These simple brown paper packages would be easy to dress up for all sorts of occasions. The possibilities are truly endless and I think that I need to make more very soon. They would look adorable with these simple snowman ornaments that we made recently. These apple cinnamon ornaments would be great additions too.

Materials Needed to Make This Holiday Cracker Craft

  • Craft tubes – Paper towel rolls or toilet paper rolls would work too.
  • Cracker strips – I found cracker snaps at Michaels.
  • Paper for wrapping – Craft paper, wrapping paper, or even lighter weight scrapbook paper could be used.
  • String, yarn, or ribbon – This is for closing the ends of the crackers once they are filled.
  • Small party favors/prizes – Cracker fillings could include things like small toys, treats, novelty erasers, and stickers.

How to Make These DIY Holiday Crackers

Pick up a few small items to fill the crackers with. I went with silly moustaches, mini stamps, chocolates, and mini flashlights #forthewin!

For our Christmas feast, I also went with simply embellishing our crackers with baker’s twine, tags, and these adorable reindeer (found at Target).

Begin by filling the tube with all of your goodies and the cracker strip (don’t forget that fun popper!)

Wrap the tube and secure the paper using a glue stick or tape. Then tie each end with pieces of ribbon or string. Be sure to leave enough room for guests to grab each end of the cracker strip to pull it.

Ahhh, there is just something about brown paper packages that is therapeutic. I love the simplicity of these crackers, but you can totally add whatever kinds of embellishments you want. It’s simple to match these with your Christmas dinner table or holiday decor because all you need to do is use coordinating paper or ribbon.

I chose to add a bit of baker’s twine, a reindeer clothespin, and a tag simply punched out of cardstock. Now all that remains to do before the festivities is write each guest’s name on the tags.
