Garlic Naan Recipe

‌Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp active dry yeast (I prefer to use instant yeast over the traditional variety.)
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 3/4 cup plain Greek yogurt or natural plain yogurt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil, plus 2 tbsp extra for cooking
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting — 19 1/2 oz. or 560 g
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt

Garlic Butter Ingredients:

  • 3 tbsp butter, melted
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped

Directions:

1. Begin by combining water, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl. Allow the mixture to sit for 5-10 minutes, until it starts bubbling on top.

2. Next, add milk, yogurt, oil, minced garlic, flour, baking powder, and salt to the bowl. Mix everything together using your hands, until a soft dough forms.

3. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it with floured hands until it becomes smooth, typically taking 3 to 5 minutes.

4. Lightly grease the same mixing bowl with a little oil to prepare for the naan.

5. Place the dough back into the greased bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Let the dough rise at room temperature for approximately an hour, until it doubles in size.

6. Once it has risen, divide the naan dough into 10 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.

7. Using a rolling pin, roll out each dough ball into a large oval shape, about 6 inches long and 1/8 inch thick.

8. Preheat the oven to 400 F.

9. Place naan on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.

10. Bake for 8-10 mins, until it starts to puff up and turn golden.

11. Flip the bread and bake for another 8-10 mins on the other side.

12. Once cooked, brush the naan with melted butter and garlic.

13. Enjoy!

Tips and Tricks:

  • If your yeast mixture doesn’t get bubbly, the yeast is dead. Throw it out and buy fresh yeast.
  • Instead of using an oven, try cooking your homemade naan in a cast iron skillet.
  • While best eaten the day it is made, leftover naan can be stored in an airtight container. It can be warmed up in a hot skillet or in the oven before serving the next day.

FAQ:

  • Can I make this recipe using a stand mixer and dough hook attachment? Sure!
  • Will using whole wheat flour, instead of white flour, affect the final results? Yes, the bread will not be as soft and pliable.
  • How important is fresh garlic in this recipe? Can I used jarred instead? You bet! You can also substitute 1 tsp of garlic powder.
