Where I live, there are many restaurants that offer delicious food from around the world. But you know me! I want to make these dishes at home too.

Too busy to make this right away? Pin it for later! Pin this post to your favorite board on Pinterest and it will be there when you’re ready!

What is yum yum sauce?

Yum yum sauce was first made popular in Japanese steakhouses and Japanese hibachi restaurants. Sometimes called sakura sauce or hibachi sauce, the recipe I am sharing with you today has a Korean twist.

The sauce uses a red chili paste, called gochujang, to give it heat. This chili paste is popular in many Korean dishes. In this particular case, it also gives the yum yum sauce a very pretty pink color.

This homemade yum yum sauce uses just a few simple ingredients and takes minimal prep time. By minimal, I mean next to no time at all!

It is the perfect recipe to add to your repertoire. This delicious sauce is also a great way to introduce Korean flavors to your meals and take your condiment game to the next level.

While there are store-bought versions of this popular sauce available, it is just so easy to make at home. As a bonus, you also get to avoid all the extra preservatives that get added to most store-bought sauces.

With mayonnaise as the main ingredient, this yum yum sauce recipe is also a great option for those of you who follow a low carb or keto diet. You will want to start keeping a bottle of it in your fridge at all times.

Tips and tricks:

  • Not all grocery stores carry specialty spices that are used in Korean dishes, like gochujang. Check the asian-food section of large supermarkets or dedicated asian grocery stores when searching for these kinds of spices and spice mixtures.
  • If you have looked everywhere, and still can’t find gochujang, try substituting it with Sriracha sauce or your favorite hot sauce.
  • Yum yum sauce will last for up to a week when stored in an airtight container or squeeze bottle in the fridge.
  • For a more spicy yum yum sauce, add a little more gochujang. If it is too spicy, reduce the amount that you use. Customize it to your tastes.
  • Add rice vinegar, garlic powder, olive oil or cayenne pepper to taste.
