Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef high fat
  • 4 sesame seed buns
  • 8 slices processed cheese
  • Condiments: tomato ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard

Instructions

  • Roll the ground beef into 8 equal-sized balls. Press the burger balls into flat patty shapes about 1/4” thick. You will need 2 patties per burger.
  • Heat a large frying pan on medium heat and when hot, slice the hamburger buns and toast in the hot pan, cut side down, for around 30 seconds until golden brown. When done, remove and set aside.
  • On medium-high, cook the beef patties for 2-3 minutes per side until well done or the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees.
  • To assemble the burger, spread mayo on the top bun and squirt the ketchup and mustard on the bottom bun.
  • Place one of the burger patties on the bottom bun, then top with two slices of the processed cheese, adding the next patty on top of the cheese, before putting on the top bun and giving the whole thing a good squish down with your hand.
  • Wrap the burger in tin foil, folding each corner of foil into the middle of the burger and wrapping tightly. This helps to soften the bun and melt the cheese, giving it that authentic Five Guys taste.

Notes

  • Because the meat has no added seasoning, use a top-quality beef to get the best results out of this recipe. None of that lean stuff will do!
  • If you prefer your hamburger patties to be more uniform in size and shape, try using a hamburger press or even a mason jar ring to form them.
  • Make up the burgers ahead of time. Keep the individual patties separated with parchment paper or wax paper and store them in the fridge or freezer. When you are ready to cook the meat, pull out as many patties as you want.
  • Store leftover burgers in an airtight container in the fridge.
