Ingredients for Halloween black pancakes in bowls on a white counter.

Ingredients

  • Egg – helps make the pancakes fluffy and binds the batter together.
  • Salted butter, melted – adds rich flavor and keeps your pancakes moist and delicious.
  • Pure vanilla extract – a little vanilla adds warmth and enhances the sweetness of the pancakes.
  • Milk – whatever you have in the fridge works.
  • All-purpose flour – makes your pancakes light and fluffy.
  • Baking powder– this gives your pancakes that rise, making them thick and soft.
  • Granulated sugar – sweetens the batter just enough.
  • Black gel food coloring – adds a spooky black tint to the batter without affecting the texture.
  • Strawberry syrup – perfect for drizzling on top, adding a fruity sweetness and a splash of red.
  • Red gel food coloring – for adding a dramatic red drips to your pancake presentation.
  • White icing or frosting – for the decorative ghost.

3. Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients. Mix well. Small clumps are fine. Do not over mix! Add black food coloring until black batter is achieved.

4. Heat up the griddle or skillet on medium heat. Add a small amount of butter to grease the skillet.

5. Drop scoops of pancake batter in the center of the skillet.

6. Let cook until bubbles begin to form on top of the pancake and the edges are baked through. Flip and cook the other side for about one minute, until done. Remove from the skillet. Repeat until all batter is used up.

7. Stack pancakes on a serving dish and set aside.

8. In a small bowl, mix together the syrup and red food coloring. Fill up a syringe.

9. If you choose to add icing, use the back of a tablespoon to smear it on top of the pancakes, creating a ghost shape. Use a toothpick and black gel food coloring to create a cute little ghost face.

10. Serve them up and hand the kiddos a syringe to top their pancakes with fake blood! Spooky fun! Enjoy!

Recipe Notes

  • Instead of a ghost, draw spider webs or monsters. You could also use orange icing to decorate your pancakes with pumpkins or jack-o-lanterns.
  • Pieces of fresh fruit, like blueberries, banana slices, and raspberries, are great for creating spooky designs on your pancakes. Add details with candy eyes, jam, chocolate chips, and whipped cream for even more fun.
