We love these chocolate chip cookies. I remember my grandma always having a jar full of homemade cookies for the grandkids to snack on.
She used to add all sorts of things to the dough, not just chocolate chips, so you never quite knew what you were getting. But they were always delicious!
This is grandma’s ultimate kitchen sink cookie recipe – based on this original recipe, be sure to check it out!
I think that oatmeal cookies get a bad rap for being a lesser cookie. But not only are warm oatmeal cookies absolutely delicious, they are also wrapped in nostalgia.
We also love these oatmeal raisin cookies, these pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, and these snickerdoodle cookies too.
Make These Classic Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies!
Ingredients
Start with a few simple ingredients from the grocery store. The full list is in the recipe card below.
- Margarine – I routinely substitute with softened butter.
- Brown sugar – I love using dark brown sugar, but light brown is good too.
- Granulated white sugar
- Large egg
- Water
- Pure vanilla extract
- All purpose flour
- Baking soda
- Quaker oatmeal – I usually use quick oats. Old fashioned oats can be used, but the texture will be different.
- Semi sweet chocolate chips

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. Cream together margarine, sugar, water and vanilla.
3. Add remaining ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.
4. Using a cookie scoop or a spoon, drop dough onto greased cookie sheets.
5. Bake for 10-12 mins.
6. Transfer baked cookies to a wire rack to cool.
Optional Ingredients
This recipe is great to experiment with!
- White chocolate, dark chocolate, peanut butter, or butterscotch chips
- Candy-coated chocolate pieces
- Caramel chips
- Raisins or other dried fruit
- Chopped nuts
- Ground cinnamon
Tips and Tricks
- These cookies can be made using a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment or electric mixer.
- Did you know you can freeze your unbaked cookie dough? The best way to do this is to scoop all of the dough, then freeze the dough balls on a cookie sheet. This prevents them from sticking together. Once solid, they can be transferred to an airtight storage container and kept frozen for up to 3 months.
- Store leftover cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for a week or two or freeze them for later.
