You are definitely going to want to make a few in different colors! They make great gifts for the holiday season too.
This free crochet pattern is ideal for beginner crocheters. It uses basic crochet stitches and works up really quickly.
The red yarn that I used for this scarf really pulls the colour out of the delicate flowers on the material. This simple pattern is great for coordinating with a bright or neutral color.
Crochet Chiffon Infinity Scarf Tutorial:
You will need two things to create this easy crochet scarf.
- A crochet infinity scarf that is approximately 64″ x 6″, made with this free pattern. *
- A chiffon scarf, or large piece of lightweight material, measuring approximately 22″ x 76″
*I stretch the crochet scarf as I am sewing, to match the chiffon scarf in length.

Crochet Supplies:
- 16 mm crochet hook
- 100m extra bulky yarn (I like to use Charisma by Loops & Threads)
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
Crochet Abbreviations:
st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
Crochet Scarf Pattern:
Begin: ch 17
Row 1: dc into the 2nd ch from the hook, ch 1, skip a st and (dc, ch) into next st, continue (dc,ch) every 2nd st to the end of foundation chain, ch 3, turn (8)
Row 2: skip the first st, (dc, ch) into each st, and for the last st, dc into the 2nd ch from the previous row, ch 3, turn (7)
Repeat stitch pattern until the entire skein of yarn has been used. At this point, I sew the ends of the scarf together, using either a tapestry needle and the yarn tail or my sewing machine. You can also use slip stitches to connect the short ends.
Now, grab that chiffon scarf that you want to upcycle. It could be one that you purchased at a store, found while thrifting, or created out of your own material. Just be sure that it has finished edges.
The next step:
The tricky part is sewing the chiffon scarf to the crochet. Let me tell you how I do it, although there are other ways that you could do this, I am sure.
Place the chiffon scarf and the crochet scarf together, with wrong sides facing.
Sew from the right side of the fabric, gently pulling on the crochet scarf to stretch it as you go.
When stretched, the crochet scarf is about the same length as the chiffon scarf.
The chiffon scarf is generally much wider than the crochet scarf, so it can be confusing at first, when laying the scarves out to be sewn together. Just remember to sew the wrong side of each scarf together, and simply stitch the scarves together at the edges (sides).
In this photo, the two scarves are stitched together.
When looped and folded, you can see how a basic infinity scarf has been elevated to create a gorgeous, unique look! Can I ask a favor? If you use my tutorial to make a few of your own crochet infinity scarves, please link back to this tutorial to share the love. Thanks so much!
Tips and Tricks:
- When choosing crochet patterns, always check the skill level needed, to be sure it’s a good fit for you.
- Crochet hook size can make a real difference in the finished size of your crochet items. If you tend to crochet quite tightly, it may be beneficial to go up a size. If your crochet stitches tend to be loose, go down a size.
- Only have worsted weight yarn, but the pattern calls for bulky yarn? No problem! Just use two strands of worsted weight yarn, held together.
- For easy washing, choose a cotton yarn.

How fun! I’ve seen a few projects that mixed fabric and crochet, but this is one of the best!

I love this idea. I have a question though, as I am tad confused. Do you sew the crocheted scarf to one edge of the silk scarf and then to the other side? I can’t figure out from the photo where exactly you sew the two pieces together and then do you so the open ends to make it into a circle? Sorry if I am being a twit but I can’t figure it out :) Thanks!
Yes, sew one long edge of the crocheted piece to one side of the scarf and the other side of the long edge of the crocheted piece to the other side of the scarf. They sew the short ends together. Does that help?
Are you sewing two chiffon scarves, each to the length of the crochet scare making a “thicker” cowl? Or are you only sewing one length of chiffon making cowl half fabric half crochet?
Thanks
One scarf – so half fabric, half crochet :)
