This Hawaiian short rib recipe is absolutely delicious and one of my favorite things to cook on the grill. The teriyaki and pineapple marinade gives these Hawaiian style ribs the perfect sweet and savory flavor.

The whole family loves these Hawaiian ribs because they take us all back to our love for Maui and the street food there. Today’s recipe is one that we now make at backyard BBQs and family gatherings all the time.

What are beef short ribs?

Short ribs are a cut of meat taken from the rib area of beef cattle. They can be cut in a cross section in short portions of various thickness.

One of our favorite places to stop for food when visiting the island, is on the road to Hana. There is a local road side food stand that serves the most tasty Maui ribs, cooked over an open fire rotisserie in the back of a trailer on the side of the road. You know the one??

We always stop there for a Hawaiian plate lunch of ribs and BBQ chicken served over a few scoops of rice. Coming home, we miss these amazing asian Hawaiian short ribs!

In an effort to enjoy our favorite Hawaiian food at home, we’ve been exploring easy recipes that remind us of island living. The marinade that we’ve developed for these short ribs is nothing short of fantastic!

A combination of fresh pineapple juice, soy sauce, brown sugar and ginger makes for the best Maui rib marinade!

Supplies:

The ingredients to make Hawaiian short ribs.

Ingredients:

  • 12 short ribs (about 1lb), raw and defrosted
  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup red wine
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 Tbsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 Tbsp hot sauce
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes

Directions:

1. In a large bowl, combine the marinade ingredients (excluding water).

2. Pat the racks of ribs dry with paper towel and place them in a casserole dish.

3. Cover the ribs with the marinade.

4. Top with cold water so that the ribs are completely covered in marinade.

5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, overnight is better.

6. Preheat the grill to 400 degrees F.

7. Drain the marinade from the ribs and toss excess marinade.

8. Place the ribs on the grill grate.

9. Cook for 3-4 mins per side for a total cook time of 6-8 minutes.

Serve with white rice and grilled pineapple. Garnish with green onions, white sesame seeds or parsley.

WHAT TO SERVE WITH HAWAIIAN RIBS:

  • Potato salad, grilled corn salad or macaroni salad.

RIB COOKING TIPS:

  • Be sure that the internal temperature of the ribs comes to 190 degrees F.
  • The longer the marinating time, the more flavourful the ribs!
  • Cover leftover ribs in plastic wrap or place them in an airtight container to store in the fridge for a few days.
  • Use a meat thermometer if possible as a thin cut of beef will take less time to cook than a thick piece of meat.
  • These ribs may be cooked over a gas grill or charcoal grill.
