  • We love to use brown button mushrooms for this easy recipe, however it works great with many types of mushrooms.
  • Morels grow here locally and are a treat to cook with. Check out this morel sauce that I made after an expedition to forage for wild mushrooms!
  • Costco has started to carry premium mushrooms, like shiitake and oyster mushrooms. We purchase a pack of those any time that we see them.
  • White button mushrooms work just as well as brown ones too.
  • Portabella mushrooms are another favorite!

Tips and Tricks

  • I find that I get the best results when using a cast iron skillet, but if you don’t have one, a large saucepan will work.
  • For an extra treat, sprinkle a little bit of parmesan cheese on top of your cooked mushrooms. So good!
  • Adjust the seasonings in the sauce according to your tastes. Try garlic powder, black pepper, onion powder, or cayenne pepper.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge.

Tips for Cooking with Cast Iron

  • When cooking with cast iron, be sure to season the surface first.
  • Always use gloves or oven mitts while cooking, as the surface of the iron will be hot.
  • Cook the recipe over an open fire using hot coals, not open flames. A fire that is too hot will burn the outside of your recipe and not cook the inside.
  • Be sure to clean the cast iron with a rough vegetable scrubber, rinse and dry thoroughly before storing.
