A friend {who teaches Yoga in the park} asked me to create a Yoga Mat Bag for her. She wanted something that was cool, “etsyish” and “funkarific”. {I love her terminology}. But I totally got it and was excited to get creating! I came up with this scrappy looking bag that boasts: a pocket for a cell phone or water bottle, a reinforced shoulder strap, a drawstring top and is completely reversible.
Wouldn’t this make a great last minute Mother’s Day gift? Fill it with a Yoga mat, receipt for Yoga classes and a gift certificate from Lu Lu Lemon! Perfect.
Here is the pocket. I made sure that it was big enough to be multi-purpose and double top stitched it for a more polished look. {Can a bag be polished? :P}
I wanted to make sure that the strap could withstand long walks and hikes through the park. Here it is, all reinforced with extra stitching.
I created a small pocket at the top of the bag for a drawstring.
Completely reversible if you want to change it up.

Great idea and I love the fabrics you used
I am confused about how it is reversible. One strap? Do I sew a liner to go inside the main one?
You can turn it inside out to use as a bag, without the strap. Yes, there is the patterned fabric outside and solid fabric inside.
Thanks. That is how I made it, and I’m happy with the results.
Awesome!! :)
These look great but are there instructions? I don’t know where to start?!
You said to use 1/4″ seam allowance. Is that fabric already included in the pattern sizes or should I add it?
It’s already included :)
I really would love to make this and have printed out the cutting and measuring instructions, am looking for the sewing instructions and don’t see them anywhere. Can you please provide insight??Thanks – look forward to hearing back.
Hello! Thank you so much for visiting! I am so sorry, I don’t have detailed sewing instructions for this bag. I wrote this post eight years ago so the details are long gone. If I decide to update this sewing project with detailed instructions I will let you know <3
Amazing that you share this beautiful bag love your share

How much fabric do I need to buy?
At least 2 yards of fabric.
What kind of fabric should I use?
Quilting cotton works great!
I just found this pattern and excited to get it started. I am thinking I won’t make it reversible but will topstitch the seams.
Wondering what material did you use for the drawstring?
It’s a woven ribbon, have fun!
