We absolutely love this easy apple dessert recipe! The boys love the combination of Pillsbury cinnamon rolls and apple pie filling – two simple ingredients that are always a win with teenagers.
What could be better than hot, gooey homemade cinnamon buns straight from the oven?! Cinnamon rolls coated in sticky apples and drizzled with icing sugar, that’s what!
Apple cinnamon roll casserole:
Ingredients:
- 12.4 oz container of Pillsbury Grands Cinnamon Rolls
- 540 ml can of apple pie filling
- 340 g vanilla frosting, optional
Tip: homemade cream cheese icing can also be added to the top of the casserole but using the icing that comes with the cinnamon rolls is just as good! We also like to add extra vanilla frosting but it’s totally optional.
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees f. Spray a large casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.
2. Open the can of dough, set aside the icing and cut each of the five rolls into quarters.
3. Place the quartered cinnamon roll pieces into the prepared baking dish.
4. Fill the spaces between the cinnamon roll dough with apple pie filling.
5. Spread apple pie filling over the entire dish.
6. Bake in the oven for 55 minutes or until the cinnamon rolls are cooked through and golden brown.
7. Top with reserved icing from the Pillsbury rolls. Add additional vanilla frosting if desired.
This round dish is good for a smaller gathering but if you have a larger crowd, be sure to use a 9×13 sized baking dish and add another can of Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls.

How to store this apple casserole:
If you have leftovers of this dish, which is highly unlikely, you can store them in an airtight container (or covered in plastic wrap) at room temperature for a day or in the fridge for up to one week.
This is a big hit with the entire family and the perfect way to feed a crowd on busy mornings. It also makes a delicious baked dessert for special occasions!
Casserole variations:
- Refrigerate overnight or for at least four hours before cooking to create an overnight breakfast casserole.
- Place the ingredients into a slow cooker and cook for 2 hours on the low setting to create crock pot cinnamon roll casserole.
- Another favorite is drizzling caramel sauce or maple syrup overtop for a truly sweet treat.
- Heat oven and bake a pie crust, then in a large bowl combine apple mixture with a can of cinnamon rolls. Spoon mixture over the pie crust and bake to create a cinnamon roll apple cobbler
- These could be made in a muffin tin and topped with vanilla ice cream for individual cinnamon roll treats.
