Tips for Cooking With a Camp Cooker

  • When cooking with a camp cooker, begin by applying nonstick cooking spray or oil to the inside of both cooking plates. This step is important so that your delicious meal doesn’t stick to the plates and burn.
  • Place your recipe ingredients into the cooker before closing and latching it.
  • Cook the recipe over an open fire. We recommend placing the cooker over the fire for two minutes before unlatching, checking for doneness, and flipping the cooker over to cook the other side.
  • Use caution when handling both the metal latch and handles, as they can become hot while cooking.

I love how simple this camping recipe is for kids to make. My boys love to cook over the campfire all by themselves, so all that I have to do is provide the ingredients for them and they are good to go. Everyone can make their own individual pizza pocket filled with their favorite ingredients. It’s a win, win!

Tips and Tricks

  • Make a toppings bar at camp so everyone can build their own individual pizza pocket their way!
  • Preheat the camp cooker for a minute or two before adding your tortilla for a crispier bottom.
  • Use a cast iron pie iron for the best resultsโ€”it distributes heat evenly and makes the crispiest crust.
  • Donโ€™t overstuffโ€”these pockets are small but mighty, and too much filling can cause leaks.
  • Let it cool for a minute before biting in. Trust me, molten cheese lava is real.
  • Try olive oil instead of spray for extra flavor and a crispier texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whatโ€™s the best way to keep ingredients cold while camping?
Use a cooler with ice packs or frozen water bottles and store pizza toppings in Ziploc bags. Keep it all in the shade whenever possible.

Can I use regular pizza dough instead of tortillas?
Yes! If youโ€™re going for that traditional pizza vibe, roll your dough thin and cook it a little longer in the camp cooker for that delicious golden brown crust.

What else can I cook in a pie iron?
So many things! From hot dogs to sโ€™mores-stuffed pudgy pies, itโ€™s one of the easiest ways to make all kinds of delicious camping recipes.

How do I clean my camp cooker after use?
Let it cool, then wipe it down with a damp cloth or use a brush. Avoid soap if itโ€™s cast ironโ€”you want to keep that seasoning!

Whatโ€™s a good substitute if I donโ€™t have a pie iron?
A cast iron skillet with another pan on top can work, or wrap your pocket in foil and cook it on a camp stove.
