DIY Jack O Lantern Diffuser

Dollar store pumpkins are one of my favorite things to upcycle! Number one, they’re cheap and number two, with a little spray paint the possibilities are endless!
I love customizing seasonal swag to match my decor. Rather than swapping everything out to celebrate Halloween, I like to add pops of holiday embellishments that compliment what I already have going on.
That’s where creating this epic DIY painted pumpkin diffuser comes in! It’s totally unique, festive and custom made to coordinate with the rest of my Halloween decorations around the house.

This pumpkin diffuser is great because it’s totally customizable. Simply choose your paint color and permanent maker and voila! You’re good to go.
How did I make this dollarstore Jack-O-Lantern into a diffuser you ask? By simply cutting a section of the back open and placing my diffuser inside! Let me show you how…

Supplies:
- Plastic Jack-O-Lantern – I found this one at Dollaramma for $5.
- Rustoleum Flat White Spray Paint – you could use glossy too but I love the flat finish that this pumpkin has. Rustoleum is an awesome paint to use on plastic, check out how it held up on our playground slide!
- Permanent Black Sharpie Markers – I used three different tip sizes.
- Diffuser for Essential Oils – this one from Amazon is a favorite and fits perfectly in the Jack O Lantern.
- Sharp knife, exacto knife or scissors.
How to make a DIY Pumpkin Diffuser!
Directions:
1. Place the plastic jack o lantern on a clean, dry surface covered in newspaper or a drop cloth.
2. Prepare the spray paint by giving it a good shake.
3. Spray paint the entire pumpkin white. Allow the paint to dry between coats. You will need 2-3 coats of paint for good coverage.
4. Use a sharp knife to carefully carve out a section at the back of the pumpkin that is large enough to fit the diffuser in.
For me this was approx. 2.5″ x 7″.
5. Use a black sharpie to draw festive Halloween designs all over the pumpkin.
I free-handed all of these designs. You could practise on a scrap sheet of paper before hand if you wanted. Be sure to include images, words and script to give it that “doodle” look and have fun!
6. Finally, place the diffuser inside of the pumpkin and turn it on.
Doesn’t this Halloween diffuser look great?! I love that we are repurposing an old diffuser rather than buying a new one!
Remember to have fun with this project, the sky is the limit! I already want to see what one would look like painted black with white lettering.
