I love making crochet Christmas gnomes, these cute little guys are so fun to add to our Christmas decor. Making my own Christmas tree decorations is always one of my favorite ways to get into the holiday spirit at Christmas time.

Free Crochet Gnome Pattern

HAT

Crochet gnome hat row 1.

Ch 3

Row 1: 2sc into 2nd chain, 2sc in 1st chain, turn

Row 2 of the crochet gnome process.

Row 2: sc across, turn. (4)

Row 3: sc, 2sc, 2sc, sc, turn (6)

Row 4: sc across, turn (6)

Row 5: sc across, turn (6)

Crochet Gnome Process

Row 6: sc, sc, 2sc, 2sc, sc, sc, turn (8)

Row 7: sc across (8)

Crochet gnome hat before finishing off.

SI St, fasten off.

Weave in ends.

Chunky yarn wrapped around three fingers 12 times.

BEARD

Wrap chunky yarn around 3 fingers 12 times.

The wrapped yarn is tied with a scrap piece of yarn.

Pull off slowly to keep the shape and tie together with a scrap piece of yarn at the top.

The wrapped yarn held together to create a beard for the gnome.

Fan out and glue the beard to the bottom of the hat.

Hot glue is used to attach the crochet hat to the beard.

Cut the bottom loops of the beard and trim.

A wood bead is glued between the bottom of the hat and the top of the bead to create a nose.

NOSE

Hot glue nose to the center top of the beard.

Attach yarn to top of gnome hat, knot to create a loop.

Gnomes are made with a yarn beard, wood bead nose, and crochet hat.

Gnome variations

  • Use different colors of yarn to make a variety of hats.
  • Crochet in the front loop or back loop of the previous row to create a whole different look.
  • Use half-double crochet instead of single to make a larger gnome.
  • Make a Halloween gnome, Santa gnome, valentine’s day gnome or patriotic gnome by simply changing up the yarn colors.

  • Stitch marker
  • Worsted weight yarn brown
  • Chunky yarn cream
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Wooden beads

Instructions

HAT:

  • Ch 3
  • Row 1: 2sc into 2nd chain, 2sc in 1st chain, turn
  • Row 2: sc across, turn. (4)
  • Row 3: sc, 2sc, 2sc, sc, turn (6)
