Sandwiches don’t have to be boring though. Today’s recipe for hot ham and cheese sandwiches is always a big hit with our family and I’m sure they will be with yours too.
These foiled-wrapped hot sandwiches are so much more than a boring slice of deli meat between two pieces of bread. The combination of salty ham and melted cheese is so good too.
They go perfectly with a side salad or bowl of soup for an easy weeknight dinner or quick lunch. They make great party sandwiches too.
Use this easy recipe as a base to try all kinds of combinations of deli meats and cheese. You could even make multiple varieties in the same loaf. Enjoy!

Equipment:
Ham and Cheese Pull Apart Sandwich Recipe:
Ingredients:
- 1 loaf french bread, sliced
- 8 oz (250g) ham, sliced
- 8-10 slices of cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
1. Cut slices into the loaf of bread, about 1/2″ apart and not all the way through to the bottom, using a large serrated knife.
2. Add mayonnaise to the inside of every second slice.
3. Next, stuff the opening with several ham slices.
4. Layer that with a slice of cheddar cheese.
5. Wrap the entire loaf in aluminum foil. Depending on the size of the pieces of foil, you may need to use two layers to reach all the way around the sandwich.
6. Place the package in the oven at 350 F.
7. Cook until cheese melts and loaf is heated through, about 20 minutes.
8. To serve, simply slice all the way through the bread to cut it into individual sandwiches.
Variations:
- Use any type of ham you like best. Black forest ham and honey ham are easy to find in the deli section of your favorite grocery store. You can also use leftover ham from a previous meal.
- Change it up by using a different type of cheese. We like Monterey jack cheese, mozzarella, muenster cheese, or Swiss cheese slices.
- Try roast beef, turkey, or chicken instead of ham.
- Instead of french bread, use slices of bread and a panini press to make a ham and cheese melt.
- Make individual foil-wrapped sandwiches on dinner rolls or hamburger buns.
- Make this recipe into ham and cheese sliders using a package of Hawaiian sweet rolls. Keeping the whole package of buns attached, cut the tops of the rolls off, add the filling, and wrap in foil. Bake as directed above. When you are ready to serve them, cut apart the individual sliders and enjoy!
- Enhance your mayo. Add it to a small bowl and mix in some Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and/or garlic powder before spreading it onto the bread.
- Add your favorite mustard. Dijon mustard, yellow mustard, and stone ground mustard are some of our favorites.
TIPS & TRICKS:
- Make these simple sandwiches ahead of time. Slice and fill your bread loaf, then wrap well in plastic wrap and refrigerate until you are ready to bake it.
- Save yourself from having to clean up a mess in the bottom of your oven by placing the foiled loaf on a baking sheet.
If you are a sandwich lover, but are looking for something new and interesting, try these leftover turkey pull-apart sandwiches, roast beef sliders, or Philly cheese steaks.
