Grilled cheese is usually a staple at home, so why not bring this family favorite along for the ride? My kids love comfort food when we are camping in the great outdoors.

Letโ€™s be real: when you’re deep in the woods, your hairโ€™s a mess, the kids are covered in marshmallow goo, and someoneย definitelyย lost a shoe in the riverโ€”mealtime needs to be easy. Thatโ€™s where these campfire ham and cheese sandwiches come to the rescue.

Theyโ€™re warm, cheesy, totally comforting, and best of all? The kids can help make them while you sip your much-deserved favorite beverage.

This recipe is like a grilled cheese sandwich and a campfire pie had a delicious, cheesy baby. With just a few simple ingredients, a trusty pie iron, and an open fire, youโ€™ll have lunch or dinner ready faster than you can say, โ€œWhereโ€™s the bug spray?โ€

Why Youโ€™ll Love This Recipe

This pie iron ham and cheese recipe is the perfect mix of crispy, melty, and satisfying. These sandwiches are a total camping staple because they’re simple, versatile, and can be customized for even the pickiest kiddo (yes, even the one who thinks pepperoni is โ€œtoo spicyโ€).

Plus, they cook up in just minutes over the fire and leave you with virtually no cleanupโ€”aka the dream when you’re camping without plumbing. The flavor is classic comfort food meets campfire pies, and honestly, theyโ€™re just plain fun to make.

I love taking as much of the work as possible out of meal prep while camping. To that end, I often purchase sliced cheese and meat, as well as bread in a can.

Pizza dough, biscuits, and these crescent rolls are a fun change from the traditional loaf of bread. But two slices of bread would totally work for this recipe as well! So if you are a traditionalist, go for it!

I love pie irons for cooking while camping. We also call them camp cookers. It is essentially a cast iron sandwich maker that you can heat over the open fire. We use it year round and it works like a charm over the propane fire as well (whenever there is a fire ban in place).

You can purchase a pie iron straight from Amazon or find them at Canadian Tire or other outdoor specialty stores.

Pie Iron Ham and Cheese Sandwiches

Ingredients

  • Sliced ham โ€“ Grab whateverโ€™s on sale or leftover. Itโ€™s the salty, savory star of this melty masterpiece.
  • Sliced cheddar cheese โ€“ For those perfectly gooey cheese pulls!
  • Pillsbury crescent rolls (or a loaf of bread) โ€“ The kind that come in the can and pops like a firecracker when you open it. So fun, so flaky.
  • Non-stick cooking spray โ€“ Your secret weapon for keeping that precious dough from welding itself to the inside of the pie iron.

Instructions

1. Lightly coat the cast iron pie iron with cooking spray to keep the dough from sticking.

2. Unroll your crescent roll dough and place one triangle in the bottom of the iron.

3. Layer with a slice of cheese, a folded slice of ham, another slice of cheese, and top with a second crescent triangle. Press it down gently.

4. Close and latch the camp cooker.

5. Cook over the fire, opening the iron to check progress periodically.

6. Cook for approximately 4โ€“5 minutes per side, depending on how hot the fire is, until golden and bubbly.

Tips and Tricks

  • For best results with crescent dough, cook slowly over low heat to bake the dough adequately.
  • Pre-make individual ham and cheese bundles at home and store them in zip-top bags for quick assembly at camp.
  • Swap in pieces of bread or buns if you forgot the crescent rolls. It’ll still be amazing!
  • Use a double pie iron if youโ€™ve got a hungry crew to feedโ€”trust me, one just wonโ€™t cut it.
  • Line your pie iron with parchment if youโ€™re short on cooking sprayโ€”less mess, more chill.
  • Let kids build their own pocket with add-ins like leftover chicken, pizza sauce, or even apple pie filling!

Tips for Cooking With a Camp Cooker

  • When cooking with a camp cooker, begin by applying nonstick cooking spray or oil to the inside of both cooking plates. This step is important so that your delicious meal doesn’t stick to the plates and burn.
  • Place your recipe ingredients into the cooker before closing and latching it.
  • Cook the recipe over an open fire. We recommend placing the cooker over the fire for two minutes before unlatching, checking for doneness, and flipping the cooker over to cook the other side.
  • Use caution when handling both the metal latch and handles, as they can become hot while cooking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use bread instead of crescent rolls in a pie iron?
Absolutely! You can use slices of white bread, pizza dough, flaky biscuits, croissants, flour tortillas, etc. The sky is the limit. Just adjust the cook time depending on thickness and watch those edges for a nice crisp.

How long do you cook a pie iron sandwich over the fire?
For a sandwich like this, about 4โ€“5 minutes per side over medium heat or hot coals usually does the trick. Flip it often and peek inside to check for that golden perfection.

Whatโ€™s the difference between a pie iron and a sandwich press?
A pie iron is a camping essential designed to cook over an open fire, while a sandwich press is for indoor kitchen use. The pie iron seals in fillings and gives you that crave-worthy golden brown crustโ€”perfect for campfire pies!

Do I need to preheat my pie iron?
It helps! Preheating the cast iron pie iron for a minute or two makes the crust crisp up faster and prevents sticking. Just don’t forget the cooking spray tooโ€”double insurance.

Can I make dessert in a pie iron?
Heck yes! Swap the ham and cheese for marshmallow fluff, peanut butter, or pie fillings like cherry or apple.

How do I clean a pie iron after use?
Let it cool, then scrub gently with a brush and hot water. Skip the soap to preserve the seasoningโ€”just like cleaning your favorite cast iron pan at home.

Whether youโ€™re making this pie iron ham and cheese recipe for lunch, dinner, or a midnight snack under the stars, these pockets are the kind of delicious food that makes camping feel like a five-star getawayโ€”minus the room service.
