Salmon Appetizer Recipe

Servings 6-8

Prep Time 10 mins

Ingredients for smoked salmon cucumber bites in clear glass bowls on a white counter.

Ingredients

  • Smoked salmon pieces – we love using this cold smoked salmon recipe.  Our Traeger smoked salmon recipe would be good too!
  • Long english cucumber or mini cucumbers, sliced – the smaller rounds of the mini cucumbers creates smaller bite sized appies.  Don’t cut them too thin or they will not be sturdy enough to hold the toppings.
  • Herb & garlic cream cheese, softened to room temperature – this is our favorite Philedelphia cream cheese flavour.
  • Fresh dill – dill always pairs beautifully with fish like this salmon.  Fresh is best!
  • Lemon zest – perfect for garnishing salmon dishes.
  • Bagel seasoning – use everything but the bagel seasoning, sesame seeds or poppy seeds.

Tips & Tricks for Cucumber Salmon Bites

  • Customize the Cream Cheese: Create a flavorful herb cream cheese by mixing plain cream cheese with your choice of fresh herbs like dill or chives. For a twist, try using Boursin cheese, Greek yogurt, or crème fraîche to elevate the flavor.
  • Preparation and Storage: These cucumber salmon bites are best enjoyed fresh, but if you’re prepping for a gathering, store them in an airtight container in the fridge. Use paper towels to pat dry the cucumber slices to keep them crisp before adding the toppings.
  • Mix for Convenience: For an easier appetizer spread, combine the salmon, cream cheese, and herbs in a small bowl before piping or spreading the mixture onto each slice of cucumber. This method ensures a smooth, even spread.
  • Experiment with Toppings: Enhance your salmon cucumber appetizer by adding black pepper, a squeeze of lemon juice, or some pickled red onions on top. Goat cheese or sour cream can also be used as a base instead of cream cheese for a unique flavor.
  • Use a Piping Bag: Use a piping bag to neatly add the cream cheese mixture onto the cucumber slices. This is especially handy when making large quantities for holiday gatherings or special occasions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use regular cucumbers instead of English cucumbers?

Yes, regular cucumbers work well for this salmon appetizer. Just be sure to slice them evenly and pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.

What are some other cheese options?

You can substitute cream cheese with Boursin cheese, goat cheese, Greek yogurt, or even a lemon dill cream cheese for a tangy twist. These alternatives offer different flavor profiles that complement the cold-smoked salmon perfectly.

Can I make these bites ahead of time?

While it’s best to serve these salmon appetizer bites fresh, you can prepare them the night before. Store them in an airtight container in the fridge and assemble them just before serving to keep the cucumbers crisp.
