Tips and Tricks

  • The packets can be placed on a baking sheet to help prevent the packet from leaking in the oven.
  • You can also cook them over the open flame of the campfire on a grate over medium heat. Use heavy duty foil if you are worried about the aluminum tearing.
  • Move and open packets carefully as they will be hot! Using oven mitts would be a good idea.
  • Transfer any leftovers to an airtight container to keep in the fridge for a few days.

How do You Fold a Foil Packet?

  • For the best results, start by pulling the top and bottom of the aluminum foil to meet in the center.
  • Fold the two edges together tightly along the entire length. A 1-2″ overlap is ideal.
  • Finally, the easiest way to seal the ingredients in is to roll up the ends of the foil to create a packet.

Ingredients

The good news is that this recipe uses simple ingredients that the entire family is sure to love!

  • Top sirloin steak, cut into strips or 1-inch pieces โ€“ This tender, flavorful cut cooks quickly and stays juicy while soaking up all that delicious teriyaki goodness.
  • Broccoli florets โ€“ Adds a fresh, slightly crisp texture and balances the richness of the steak beautifully.
  • Bell peppers, cubed โ€“ Colorful bell peppers bring sweetness, vibrant color, and a slightly smoky grilled flavor.
  • Yellow onion, diced โ€“ As it cooks, the onion becomes soft and slightly sweet, adding depth to every bite.
  • Teriyaki sauce โ€“ A bold, sweet-and-savory sauce that coats the steak and veggies in sticky, mouthwatering flavor. We like to use this homemade teriyaki sauce, but any will do.
  • Green onion stalks, diced (optional) โ€“ These add a fresh pop of flavor and a little crunch right before serving.
  • Sesame seeds (optional) โ€“ A light sprinkle gives a subtle nutty taste and a fun finishing touch.

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

2. Cut up the vegetables and slice the steak.

Tip: At this point, you can put the ingredients in a large bowl and toss with teriyaki sauce or skip that, save the cleanup, and layer it all on the foil.

3. Divide the ingredients equally onto four sheets of foil (about 12โ€ long).

4. Top with half of the teriyaki sauce.

6. Place packets directly onto the wire racks in the oven.

7. Cook for 10 minutes or until the steak reaches your desired level of doneness.

Tip: An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center will read 130 degrees F for medium-rare steak. Adjust cook time accordingly.

8. Top with remaining teriyaki sauce.

Substitutions

We typically add whatever fresh vegetables are in the fridge. Here are some more great options to try.

  • Any color of pepper works; red bell pepper, green, or yellow.
  • Pineapple chunks would make a great addition!
  • Soy sauce may be used in addition to the teriyaki sauce, but it really can’t replace it because it doesn’t thicken and coat the ingredients in the same way.
  • Red potatoes, green beans, red onion, snap peas, or cauliflower can all be added.
  • Store-bought teriyaki sauce is totally fine to use.

placing food on tinfoil is not a healthy idea otherwise recipe sounds great but I wonโ€™t do it because I donโ€™t want to use tinfoil according to the latest on cooking with foil touching food! Not healthy. carcinogenic, I believe.
