Pizza is always a hit with my boys, so when we go camping, it is a staple on the menu! I love that everyone can choose their favorite toppings, so there isn’t any fighting.

Add generous amounts of mozzarella cheese and you really can’t go wrong. I highly recommend you add this simple recipe to the menu the next time you are planning a camping trip.

Tips for Cooking With Cast Iron

  • When cooking with cast iron, be sure to season the surface first.
  • Always use gloves or oven mitts while cooking as the surface of the iron will be hot.
  • Cook the recipe over an open fire using hot coals, not open flames.  A fire that is too hot will burn the outside of your recipe and not cook the inside.
  • Be sure to clean the cast iron with a rough vegetable scrubber, rinse and dry thoroughly before storing.

Ingredients

  • Pillsbury pizza crust – I love using pre-made dough because it is so easy, but you can use homemade pizza dough too.
  • Primo pizza sauce – this one comes in an easy to pack and use bottle.
  • Pepperoni, sliced – you can add any of your family’s favorite pizza toppings.
  • Mozzarella shredded cheese –  using pre-shredded cheese is a huge time saver.

Instructions

1. Open the pizza dough and press it into the bottom of the Dutch oven.

Tip: spray the interior of the oven with nonstick spray or line with a large piece of parchment paper to help prevent sticking. A well seasoned cast iron oven will not need this, but it still helps.

5. Let the pizza cook over a low fire for 30-40 minutes or until the dough is baked and the cheese is melty.

Tip: rotate the Dutch oven often and move from open flame. Alternatively, this recipe can be baked in a trailer oven or over a BBQ grill.
