I think a cast iron skillet is a camp kitchen essential! It is so versatile and we use our cast iron frequently every time we head into the great outdoors. Check out the skillet category in my camping recipes section for more easy recipe ideas using a cast iron pan.

Tips for Cooking With Cast Iron

  • When cooking with cast iron, be sure to season the surface first.
  • Always use gloves or oven mitts while cooking, as the surface of the iron will be hot.
  • Cook the recipe over an open fire using hot coals, not open flame. A fire that is too hot will burn the outside of your recipe and not cook the inside.
  • Be sure to clean the cast iron with a rough vegetable scrubber, rinse, and dry thoroughly before storing.

How to Make This Skillet Pizza Recipe

Ingredients

  • Non-stick spray โ€“ Because scrubbing burnt cheese off a cast iron skillet at the campsite is NOT what I feel like spending time doing.
  • Mozzarella cheese, shredded โ€“ Go for pre-shredded cheese to save time.
  • Pizza sauce โ€“ The Primo sauce in a squeeze bottle is great for camping!
  • Pepperoni, sliced โ€“ My boysโ€™ go-to, but bring what pizza toppings your crew loves.
  • Pillsbury pizza dough โ€“ I love using pre-made dough because it is so easy, but feel free to make your own dough if you prefer.

Instructions

1. Coat the cast iron skillet with non-stick spray (or olive oil). Open the pizza dough and press into the skillet. Spread a nice layer of pizza sauce all over the crust.

4. Cook on a grill grate or over the open fire using hot coals, not open flame. Cook for about 20 minutes until itโ€™s golden brown and bubbly.

Tip: Cover with foil to help brown the top and cook on low heat to prevent the bottom of the crust from burning.

More Skillet Pizza Toppings

  • Fresh mozzarella
  • Cheddar cheese
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Pepperoni
  • Ham
  • Bacon
  • Mushrooms
  • Artichoke hearts
  • Roasted red peppers
  • Bell peppers
  • Red onion
  • Pineapple
  • Fresh basil
  • Add extra seasonings to your pizza sauce, such as garlic powder, Italian seasoning, dried basil, or oregano.

Tips and Tricks

  • Always cook over hot coals or low fireโ€”high heat will burn the bottom of your crust before the cheese even melts.
  • Cover the skillet with aluminum foil to help the top of the pizza cook evenly.
  • Let your pizza dough come to room temperature before stretchingโ€”itโ€™ll be way easier to work with.
  • Use a metal spatula to check the bottom of the dough so it doesnโ€™t overcook.
  • Donโ€™t overdo wet toppings like pineapple or mushrooms unless you pre-cook themโ€”too much moisture = soggy crust.
  • Want to make two pizzas? Bring a second 10-inch skillet so nobody has to wait!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this pizza on a gas grill or BBQ grill?
Absolutely! Just keep the heat low and indirect, and itโ€™ll cook up just like it would over a campfire.

Yes, just prep it ahead of time and store it in a large bowl covered with a lid or plastic wrap until you’re ready to cook.

What toppings travel best for camping pizza?
Think low-moisture and pre-sliced: pepperoni, bell peppers, red onion, cheddar, and pre-cooked bacon are all great options.

Can I make this in a Dutch oven?
Totally! Just follow the same steps and use the Dutch oven lid to help cook the top.

How do I clean my cast iron skillet after cooking?
Use a scrubby brush or cloth, rinse with warm water (no soap!), and dry it thoroughly over the fire or stove to prevent rust.
