The recipe I am sharing with you today lets you enjoy one of our favorite pub appetizers at home. This beer cheese sauce is so simple and delicious.
You will be shocked at how easy it is to prepare. This wonderfully cheesy snack makes a great appetizer for game day. And it is the perfect dip for any cheese lover.
Beer Cheese Sauce Recipe
Because the sauce is a combination of your favorite beer and wonderfully melty cheese, you can adjust the final flavors based on the kind of beer that you use. A darker beer will produce a stronger flavor, while a lighter beer will give your beer cheese a milder flavor.
To me, this is the perfect excuse for making this pub-style beer cheese dip over and over again.
What Can I Substitute for Cheddar Cheese?
While I love the classic flavor of cheddar in this recipe, you can use any type of cheese that is going to melt down nicely. Try mozzarella, provolone, Swiss, pepper jack, or Monterey jack cheese.
What to Serve With Beer Sauce?
- Fresh veggies
- Tortilla chips
- Potato chips

Ingredients
Start with a few simple ingredients from the grocery store.
- Salted butter
- All purpose flour
- Milk – I prefer to use whole milk for the extra creaminess but any will do.
- Beer – we often use a pale ale.
- Brown mustard – yellow or dijon will change it up a bit.
- Worcestershire sauce – say that three times fast!
- Cheddar cheese, shredded – sharp cheddar cheese gives the best results.
Instructions
1. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
2. Add flour to create a paste and then immediately add in the milk.
3. Use a whisk to stir the mixture as it thickens, so that there are no clumps.
4. Add beer, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.
5. Reduce to medium-low heat and add cheddar cheese.
6. Stir until all the cheese melts.
7. Serve warm.
Variations
- Add in extra seasonings, such as ranch dressing mix or cayenne pepper.
- Try using different types of cheese.
- Use Dijon mustard in place of brown mustard.
- Vary the type of beer in your sauce.
- Substitute apple cider for the beer and let me know how it is!
- For an alcohol-free option, use a non-alcoholic beer or chicken broth.
Tips and Tricks
Using pre-shredded cheese is a simple way to save yourself time when making this cheese sauce.
Store leftover beer cheese dip in an airtight container in the fridge. I like to use microwave-safe containers so that I can easily warm it up again.
Make this simple beer cheese sauce once and you will be hooked. I would love to hear what your beer of choice is!
