How to Make Camp Cooker French Toast

We like to use this double camp cooker from Woods whenever we’re making French toast because you can cook two slices of bread at a time.ย Single pie irons like the other ones we have work too, they just take a bit longer.

When you’re cooking for hungry boys, it’s good to make as much food as you can, as quickly as possible. LOL

Ingredients

  • French bread, sliced โ€“ Thick slices of French bread hold up perfectly when dipped in the custard mixture and toasted over the campfire.
  • Milk โ€“ Milk helps create a rich, creamy base for the French toast batter.
  • Eggs โ€“ They give the batter structure and create that classic fluffy French toast texture when cooked.
  • Butter โ€“ Butter adds delicious flavor and helps crisp the bread while cooking in the camp cooker.
  • Vanilla โ€“ Just a splash adds warm sweetness that makes the French toast taste amazing.
  • Cinnamon โ€“ For a cozy flavor that pairs perfectly with the vanilla and maple syrup.
  • Syrup โ€“ Sweet maple syrup is the classic topping that makes every bite irresistible.

Tips for Cooking With a Camp Cooker

  • When cooking with a camp cooker, begin by applying non-stick cooking spray or oil to the inside of both cooking plates. This step is important so that your delicious meal doesn’t stick to the plates and burn.
  • Place your recipe ingredients into the cooker before closing and latching it.
  • Cook the recipe over an open fire. We recommend placing the cooker over the fire for two minutes before unlatching, checking for doneness, and flipping the cooker over to cook the other side.
  • Use caution when handling both the metal latch and handles as they can become hot while cooking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What bread works best for French toast while camping?

Most camp cooker French toast takes about 4โ€“6 minutes per side over hot coals, depending on the heat of your fire.
