Tips for Cooking With Cast Iron

  • When cooking with cast iron, be sure to season the surface first.
  • Always use gloves or oven mitts while cooking, as the surface of the iron will be hot.
  • Cook the recipe over an open fire using hot coals, not open flames. A fire that is too hot will burn the outside of your recipe and not cook the inside.
  • Be sure to clean the cast iron with a rough vegetable scrubber, rinse, and dry thoroughly before storing.

Ingredients

  • Pillsbury pizza crust โ€“ I love using pre-made dough because it is so easy, but you can use homemade pizza dough too.
  • Primo pizza sauce โ€“ This one is our favorite and is super convenient to pack for camping meals.
  • Pepperoni, sliced โ€“ Savory pepperoni slices are a classic but you can add any of your family’s favoriteย pizza toppings.
  • Mozzarella shredded cheese โ€“ Using pre-shredded cheese is a huge time saver.

Instructions

1. Open the pizza dough and press it into the bottom of the Dutch oven.

Tip: Spray the interior of the oven with non-stick spray or line it with a large piece of parchment paper to help prevent sticking. A well seasoned cast iron oven will not need this, but it still helps.ย

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to cook pizza in a Dutch oven over a campfire?
Most campfire Dutch oven pizzas cook in about 20โ€“40 minutes, depending on the heat of your coals and the thickness of the crust. The pizza is done when the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Do you cook Dutch oven pizza over flames or coals?
Itโ€™s best to cook over hot coals instead of open flames. Coals provide steady heat and help prevent the bottom of the pizza from burning before the toppings cook.

How do you keep pizza from sticking in a Dutch oven?
Many campers line the Dutch oven with parchment paper or lightly grease it before adding the dough. This makes it much easier to remove the pizza once itโ€™s cooked.

Can you use store-bought pizza dough for camping pizza?
Yes! Store-bought refrigerated pizza dough is a popular option because it saves time and packs easily for camping trips while still creating a delicious crust.

How do you know when Dutch oven pizza is done?
Lift the crust slightly and check the bottom โ€” it should be golden brown and firm, while the cheese on top should be melted and bubbling.
