We just got back from a lovely camping trip with a large group of friends. It is so much fun to plan getaways with friends!

We set up a communal-style campsite where we all ate together and got to hang out. As for all of our kids, they had a blast! It really was the perfect trip.

This recipe makes perfect breakfast burritos that the whole family is sure to love. We like to enjoy them with a cup of coffee while at the campground surrounded by nature.

Too busy to make this right away?! Pin it for later! Pin this recipe to your favorite camping board on Pinterest and it’ll be waiting for you when you’re ready.

‌Best Breakfast Burrito for Camping

One of the best things we did when planning this particular trip was to delegate food. Each of the families was responsible for cooking one of the meals during our stay.

I LOVED this! Only having to cook once?!?! Awesome! My family provided breakfast on Saturday morning for 28 people (mostly kids).

And this camping breakfast burrito recipe was just the perfect thing for epic camping experiences.

Add this simple breakfast to the menu for your next camping trip. We also love these campfire recipes – this campfire dip recipe, this campfire pizza bake, and these camp cooker cookies.

  • These Grilling Bags that I recently found are amazing! Simply add all of your ingredients to the bag at home, then throw it on the campfire or grill when camping in the great outdoors. Avoid the grill bags with plastic windows, though, because they melt.
  • We love these BBQ Cooking Gloves because they make handling campfire food a whole lot safer!

Cooked italian sausage, diced onion and green pepper in a skillet.

Ingredients

  • Ground Italian sausage – you can use any ground sausage you like. We have also made these with breakfast sausage and it is delicious.
  • Medium onion, diced
  • Green bell pepper, diced
  • Minced garlic
  • Large eggs
  • Mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • Large flour tortillas

I think make-ahead food is ideal for camping and I do 90% of my camping meal preparation at home.

Instructions

1. Begin by frying a package of ground hot Italian sausage in a large skillet over medium heat.

2. Then add a medium diced onion, diced green pepper, and minced garlic.

3. Cook the mixture until the onion is cooked and the meat is well done.

Cooked scrambled eggs in a skillet.

4. Next, scramble a dozen eggs in the frying pan.

Tip: I like to add about 2 Tbsp of milk to the beaten eggs, as I find that it makes the eggs fluffier.

5. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Cooked scrambled eggs and sausage in a skillet.

6. Combine the egg and meat mixture.

7. Next, add shredded mozzarella cheese and mix everything together until the cheese has melted into the still-warm sausage and eggs.

8. Finally, spoon about 1/2 cup of the sausage and egg mixture into the center of each tortilla and roll it up.

9. Wrap each tortilla in plastic wrap so that they don’t stick to each other.

You could also use parchment paper or tin foil.  Heavy duty foil would be a great idea if you want to reheat this savory breakfast burrito directly over the campfire.

Place them into a large plastic zipper bag and into the freezer. This recipe makes about 12 camping breakfast burritos, so we doubled it for our annual camping trip.

We packed these in a cooler and brought our ready-made breakfast burritos out Saturday morning to simply heat up and serve with hash browns. They are really delicious and an easy way to have a hot breakfast while camping, without too much mess.

Tips and Tricks

  • Feel free to make additions and substitutions to your burritos. Try green onions, green chiles, different kinds of cheeses, and extra veggies. You could even throw in some tater tots. Serve with optional hot pepper sauce, sour cream, salsa, or ketchup on the side.
  • Frozen breakfast burritos are an excellent option to have in your freezer at home for a quick grab-and-go meal, especially with a house full of teens!

Ok that is definitely coming with us camping!

These look great. How did you heat up the burritos?

We used our Coleman Camping Oven. You could heat them on a skillet or over the fire too. :)

This is perfect for our camping trip this weekend! How far in advance did you make them? Would they be ok in a cooler instead of freezing?

I made them a couple of days in advance then froze them. They should be okay in a cooler for a day or two. :)

This is amazing! Did they not get soggy when defrosting?

Not soggy but a bit of liquid seeped out when heated :)

Yum!! I would love to do this too for our big group camping trip. We have been given “breakfast” duty. I’m nervous about how to cook/reheat them. We will have two camping stoves (no oven). Many thanks for tips!!

Maybe fry them on a griddle on the camp stoves? You could wrap them in tinfoil and heat them on the BBQ or fire too.

This is a fantastic recipe! We went camping this past weekend with 5 couples. I made these ahead of time as directed. To warm, we simply wrapped each burrito in heavy foil and put them on the grate over our campfire. They warmed in about 5-7 minutes and were delicious! There was no oozing of liquids, or soggy tortillas! In fact, because they were loosely wrapped, a few edges were a bit crisp, which added to the flavor. I served them with salsa. Thanks so much for what will definitely become a camping tradition!

Wonderful Sara! Just what I love to hear! xo

I love this idea, and do it for home quite often, but for camping, I like to wrap in tin foil, instead of saran wrap, then you can put them directly on the coals or grill!

Hi! This sounds so good! Definitely going to try this! How big were your tortillas and did you put oil in the pan when heating them up on the skillet?

We are going camping next weekend and this will be on the menu! Thanks for the recipe!

Looking forward to being these! There is a small error in the recipe that readers may not notice if they jump right to it without reading the blog bit. This recipe is for 12 tortillas, not 28.
