I think that cottage cheese has gotten a bad wrap over the years. Personally, I have always really enjoyed cottage cheese, but I seem to be in the minority.

Some people don’t like the flavor and a lot more people complain about the texture. These days, though, this unassuming dairy product is showing up all over social media feeds.

Why exactly is everyone singing the praises of cottage cheese? Well, it is actually an excellent addition to a healthy, balanced diet. Cottage cheese is high in protein, a source of calcium, and it is also a good low-fat and low-calorie option, even if you choose a full-fat variety.

Viral Cottage Cheese Cookie Dough

Today I want to share a recipe for a totally delicious treat made with cottage cheese – cookie dough dip! This high protein snack is perfect for satisfying my sweet tooth and my hunger. Also, blending the cottage cheese mixture gives it a velvety smooth texture that I love.

Including vanilla protein powder in this recipe helps the edible cookie dough retain the flavor of a traditional chocolate chip cookie dough, but I think a chocolate or peanut butter version would also be amazing. We will have to try them next!

We especially love to eat this dip with strawberries and graham crackers. I may have just used a spoon a time or two as well. I dare you not to eat the whole thing!

Check out the full recipe on the recipe card below.

Ingredients

  • Cottage cheese – I use 2% Dairyland cottage cheese.
  • Maple syrup – I used Lakanto sugar-free syrup. You could also use honey.
  • Pure vanilla extract
  • Almond flour – all purpose flour may be used, but it must be heat treated in order for it to be safe to eat raw. Almond flour has a gritty texture so if that’s not your jam, use the heat treated flour for a smooth alternative.
  • Protein powder – I used vanilla, but you can use whatever flavor you’d like.
  • Chocolate chips – I used Lily’s sugar-free dark chocolate chips for a sugar-free option.

Pro Tips & Recipe Notes

  • Use more or less sweetener according to your tastes.
  • Feel free to add any of your favorite cookie dough mix-ins. Try milk or white chocolate chips, caramel bits, chopped up candy bars, nuts, sprinkles, or mini M&Ms.
  • Almond flour has a gritty texture that’s not for everyone – heat treating all purpose flour is super easy and a great substitute for a smoother texture if you’re not gluten adverse. To heat treat flour, microwave in a heat safe bowl for 30 seconds, stir and heat for another 30 seconds.
  • This cottage cheese cookie dough is great for dipping but also can be shaped into balls and dipped in melted chocolate or added to an ice cream sundae or parfait.
  • You cannot make cookies from this recipe – it’ll just turn into warm goo. So go check out my detailed cottage cheese cookie recipe if that’s what you’re looking for.
