Supplies needed:
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- ½ cup avocado oil
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 3 – 3 ½ cups all purpose flour
Topping:
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tbsp water
- Sesame seeds
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Prepare a parchment-lined baking sheet and set aside.
2. In a large mixing bowl, add warm water and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes, until the yeast is nice and bubbly.
3. Once yeast has bubbled, add sugar and oil, then stir gently.
4. Add the beaten egg into the yeast mixture and stir to incorporate.
5. Add 3 cups of the flour and knead dough for 5 minutes.
6. Gradually add the remaining flour, a little at a time, as needed.
7. Once dough is kneaded into a soft dough that is no longer sticky, cut it into 8 equal pieces.
8. On a lightly floured surface, roll each piece of dough into a ball.
9. Place dough balls on the prepared baking sheet. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes.
10. After 10 minutes, beat one egg yolk with water, and brush the egg wash over the tops of each dough ball. Sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.
11. Bake for 8-12 minutes or until golden brown.
Tips and Tricks:
- If you don’t want to mix the dough by hand, put everything into the bowl of a stand mixer and use the dough hook attachment. Alternatively, you could also use a bread machine.
- Substitute some of the white flour with whole wheat flour.
- Instead of sesame seeds, try topping the buns with poppy seeds or bagel seasoning.
- If you are at all unsure about the freshness of your yeast, test it before you start your recipe. There is nothing worse than having to throw your dough out because the yeast was no good.
- Store buns in an airtight container at room temperature. If you want to make them ahead of time, they can also be frozen for up to 3 months.
While this recipe makes the perfect hamburger bun, you can also make smaller dinner rolls or hot dog buns with the dough. Make whatever shape or size you want, adjusting the baking time as needed.
Use them for pulled pork sandwiches, sloppy joes, or eat them hot and fresh from the oven. You truly can’t go wrong.
