We decided to go on a bucket list fishing trip this summer and just came back from a fishing charter out of Prince Rupert, British Columbia. We caught a ton of fresh salmon and halibut and decided to get cooking right away!
What better way to use all of this delicious white fish than in deep fried fish tacos?!
How to make keto fish tacos:
We discovered that there are few recipes for good, low carb fish tacos. I have been following a ketogenic lifestyle for nearly three years – check out my keto beginner guide to see how I lost 85lbs – so it was important to me that this recipe be gluten and sugar free.
Fish is a staple in my diet now and I have learned to love it, especially when prepared like this delicious Lemon Chipotle BBQ Salmon Recipe.
I absolutely love this keto fish taco recipe because not only is it tasty, it also fits into my macros perfectly! Each serving is high protein, low carb with moderate fat.

Keto Fish Batter:
- 1/4 cup unflavoured protein powder*
- 2/3 cup almond flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 eggs
- 1/3 cup sparkling water
* I used egg white protein powder that I purchased from Amazon but you can use any kind of unflavoured powder as long as it is sugar-free.
Keto Flour Alternatives:
- Almond flour is my personal favorite for consistency and flavour. I like to purchase the Kirkland brand almond flour from Costco.
- Coconut flour can sometimes be crumbly in my experience but good in combination with almond flour. I like the Red Mill brand.
- Rice flour is my least favorite in terms of consistency but a great alternative for those who may have allergies.
Fish fry:
- 1 pound of white fish cut into 1 “strips*
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3 litres vegetable oil
* We used fresh caught halibut but any white fish will do nicely in this recipe.
Directions:
- Prepare the fish by cutting it into 1″ strips, patting dry with paper towel and dusting each side with salt.
2. Heat the oil to 350 degrees using a deep fryer. We like to use this propane deep fryer because it can be used outside and while camping.
A note on frying:
It’s important to cook the fish at a consistent temperature to get that perfectly cooked, golden crust with the batter. Be sure to use a cooking thermometer whenever possible. This recipe is not meant for an air fryer as the batter will drip and stick to the surface before ever heating and cooking at the correct temperature.
3. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the batter ingredients and allow it to rest for ten minutes. The sparkling water is what creates the light, fluffy texture of the coating.
4. Dip the fish in the batter, coating it completely and gently place it into the hot oil.
5. Allow the fish to cook for about 2 minutes per side, rolling the fish half way through cooking so that both sides are a nice golden brown color. Each piece of fish will take about 5 minutes to cook and will need to be cooked in batches, depending on how big your deep fryer is.
6. Remove the fish from the fryer and place on paper towel to soak up any excess oil.
We served our keto fish tacos with the best salsa recipe you’ve ever had. It adds the perfect crisp, fresh flavour to this dish!
Each of our fish tacos consisted of: 1 piece of low carb deep fried halibut, shredded red cabbage & carrots, fresh salsa, homemade tartar sauce all wrapped up in a piece of romaine lettuce.
This recipe yields 16 pieces of fish and is perfect for serving a family of four with about four tacos each.
You could also use Protein Up Tortillas from Walmart for a low carb taco wrap or the egg thin wraps that I used in this Keto Tortilla Wrap Recipe from Costco.
Trust me, these keto fish tacos are everything! The combination of flavours and textures is like nothing that you’ve ever tasted at a restaurant. Absolutely delicious!
My kitchen essentials for frying:
- These rubbermade containers are perfect for storing and packing food.
- These silicone tongs are perfect for flipping and grasping food.
- This Henckel Knife is my favorite for slicing and dicing in the kitchen.
- I love using this non-stick bakeware for all of my baking.
There is seriously nothing better than ocean fresh halibut paired with local vegetables. Be sure to give this recipe a try and let us know how you like it!
