Homemade decor is a passion of mine. Thereโs just something about using twigs to create something beautiful that makes me feel like Iโm winning at both crafting and rustic holiday decorating.
This DIY twig star is the perfect way to add handmade warmth to your holiday decor. It has replaced the old store-bought angel and star tree toppers that we used to have.
This craft is budget-friendly, earthy, and makes a great addition to the top of the tree! I even got the boys involved by having them help gather the sticks, so make it a family project.

Supplies
- 10-15 Twigs, cut into 18″ lengths โ Pick sturdy, straight sticks that are dry and easy to glue together.
- Twine or hemp rope โ Adds texture and farmhouse charm while securing the twig joints in place.
- Hot glue gun โ This trusty tool is your crafting sidekick.
- Glue sticks โ I always keep a few extras handy.
- Wire โ Used to create a spring-like base that attaches your topper to the Christmas tree.
Pro tip: Use an old coat hanger as your wire base โ itโs strong and bends easily to fit on top of any Christmas tree, whether artificial or real.

Instructions
1. Start by arranging five twigs into a star shape. Then glue the ends together.
2. Layer more twigs over the original five, gluing the ends as you go.
3. Wrap twine around the joints where the twigs meet. Use hot glue to attach the twine, wrap the joint, and glue again to fasten.
4. Coil a 12″ piece of wire into a spring shape. Glue it to the bottom of the star.
5. Place the twig star at the top of your tree.

Tips and Tricks
- Dry your twigs before crafting. Fresh ones shrink and crack as they dry, which can ruin your star shape or cause the whole thing to fall apart.
- Add a touch of shimmer by lightly brushing the twigs with metallic gold paint or dusting them with glitter before gluing.
- Use floral wire hidden under the twine for extra sturdiness if your tree topper will be stored from year to year.
- Want a farmhouse vibe? Add a simple burlap bow or some faux greenery behind your star.
- Secure your topper with zip ties for real trees and wire for artificial ones โ no more toppling toppers!
- Store your twig star in a shallow box between tissue paper to keep it safe and ready for next year.
