Tips and Tricks for the Perfect Halloween Haystacks

  • Make sure your peanut butter is at room temperature to help it mix smoothly with the candy melts.
  • Add Halloween sprinkles.
  • If youโ€™re not feeling the Halloween theme, try using white almond bark to make white chocolate haystacks for a wintery twist.
  • Love butterscotch? Make butterscotch haystacks by swapping the candy melts with butterscotch chips for a tasty change.
  • For extra texture, mix in some pretzels or nuts with your chow mein noodles.
  • These haystacks are a hit during Christmastime too! Just switch up the colors and toppings.

How to Make Haystacks Without a Crockpot

Candy melts typically melt perfectly in a crockpot, but you can also melt them in a microwave. Heat them in 30-second increments, stirring in between, to make sure nothing clumps โ€” the smoother the mixture, the better the coating for your noodles.

The stove top also works, Melt the candy and peanut butter over medium heat in a glass bowl set over a large saucepan of simmering water. Again, stir until smooth, just like you would with the crockpot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use almond bark or chocolate chips instead of candy melts?
Yes! Almond bark, white chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips, or butterscotch chips all work well in this recipe. Just melt them slowly to avoid scorching.

Do Halloween haystacks need to be refrigerated?
Refrigerating helps them set faster, especially if your kitchen is warm. Once fully set, they can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container.

Can I make haystacks without peanut butter?
Absolutely! You can swap the peanut butter for cookie butter, sunflower seed butter, or leave it out entirely if desired.

Why are my haystacks falling apart?
This usually happens when there isnโ€™t enough melted candy coating to fully cover the noodles. Stir thoroughly so every noodle gets coated evenly.

Can I add other mix-ins to haystacks?
Definitely! Mini marshmallows, pretzel pieces, peanuts, candy corn, festive sprinkles, or crushed cookies all make fun additions.

How far ahead can I make Halloween haystacks?
These treats are great for making ahead and usually stay fresh for up to 5 days when stored in an airtight container.

Ohh Iโ€™m tickled to get these variations in the recipes. Iโ€™ve never made them but have had them several times with just butterscotch or chocolate. So Iโ€™m going to make them in different ideas like youโ€™ve suggested. Thank you this is awesome for my great grands and the adults. ๐ŸŽƒ
