What is a butter board?

Butter boards are the latest viral recipe and food trend from TikTok. Flavourful butter is served on a wooden board and topped with flaky salt, lemon zest, fresh herbs, as well as sweet and savory toppings. It’s an easy appetizer that is best served with crusty bread or crackers.

Food influencer Justine Doiron, first shared the original TikTok video which was inspired by Joshua Mcfadden. The original idea included edible flowers, hot honey, red onions and was served with warm bread.

While we love this combination of cheese pairings and toppings, here are a few more varieties to try next time!

Optional ingredients:

  • Drizzle with olive oil or coconut oil.
  • Use flakey sea salt or kosher salt instead of pink Himalayan.
  • Add fresh figs, fig jam or cranberries.
  • A sprinkle of bagel seasoning or a few slices of red onion would also be great options!
  • Spice it up with a dash of chili flakes or pickled jalepenos.

I saw a TikTok user make a completely carnivore butter board with bacon and sausage and my mind was officially blown. So when I say the sky is the limit and the possibilities are endless?! Clearly, it’s true!

Does the cream cheese stain the board?

I use mineral oil to condition my wooden cutting boards so no, the cheese did not stain the board. If you are concerned about staining your boards, simply use a piece of parchment paper to layer over the surface. It will help to protect the wood and make clean up easy!
