We prefer to cook these on the smoker because the indirect heat is one of the best ways to cook wings evenly and quickly. This cooking method makes for the best sticky teriyaki chicken wings, perfect for an event like super bowl Sunday but amazing any day.

These cooked wings are the perfect game day food and a favorite with the whole family! This delicious homemade sauce can be made with just a few simple ingredients from the grocery store.

How long does it take to grill chicken wings?

Chicken wings typically take 25-30 minutes to cook on the grill. Be sure to flip them every five minutes so that they cook evenly and develop crispy skin.

SUPPLIES:

Raw Chicken Wings

Teriyaki Chicken Wings:

Ingredients:

  • 2lbs chicken wings
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 5 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp fresh ginger or 1 tsp ground
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic or 1 tsp ground 
  • 2 Tbsp corn starch
  • 1/4 cup water

Note: Any kind of teriyaki sauce will work but trust me, this homemade marinade is worth the effort!

Teriyaki Marinade Ingredients

Directions:

1. In a large mixing bowl combine water, soy sauce, brown sugar, honey, ginger and garlic. Whisk together.

2. In a small bowl combine cornstarch and water.  Mix well.

3. Pour the first mixture into a medium saucepan and cook on medium heat (about 5 mins).

4. When the sauce begins to boil, add the cornstarch mixture and whisk continuously.

5. When the teriyaki marinade begins to thicken (about 2 mins), remove from heat.  Allow to cool to room temperature.

6. In a large bowl toss the chicken wings in 3/4 of the marinade, reserving some for basting.

7. Place the wings in the fridge, covered in plastic wrap, for at least one hour for best results.

Tip: a large resealable plastic bag works for marinating the wings in too.

8. Preheat the grill to medium heat, 350 degrees F.

9. Place chicken wings in a single layer on the grill. Discard the remaining marinade mixture.

10. Flip the wings every 5 minutes, basting with the remaining marinade in between.

11. Grill wings for 25-30 mins or until the internal temperature reaches 170 degrees F when measured with a meat thermometer.

12. Top with sesame seeds and serve.

These grilled wings are best served with a side of french fries, classic potato salad or ranch dressing for dipping.

TIPS AND TRICKS:

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
  • Add a little bit of onion powder, chili powder, garlic powder, black pepper or cayenne pepper to the coated chicken before grilling to take them up a notch.
  • You could coat the wing tips with a spice rub before basting with sauce. We make our own dry rub for all of our smoked recipes.
  • Use olive oil to season your grill before cooking, this will help to prevent the chicken wings from sticking.
  • Optionally, line your grill with aluminum foil so that the wings don’t stick to the grill grates.
