How to Make Foil Packet French Toast

Ingredients

  • French bread, cubed โ€“ Grab a loaf of bread thatโ€™s a bit stale. Trust me, it soaks up the custard like a champ.
  • Eggsย โ€“ The base for the custard mixture.
  • Vanilla extractย โ€“ A splash of this and your campsite will smell like a bakery.
  • Milkย โ€“ Just enough to make everything creamy.
  • Cinnamonย โ€“ A sprinkle or a shower, feel free to measure with your heart.
  • Syrupย โ€“ Real maple syrup is my go-to, but any syrup will do.
  • Powdered sugar (for topping) โ€“ For that fancy cafรฉ finish.
  • Strawberries, sliced (for topping) โ€“ We love fresh berries, but you can use any fresh fruit you like.

Instructions

1. Start by layering your cubed bread pieces into a foil pie plate or create a tinfoil packet using two sheets of aluminum foil.

2. Mix together the eggs, milk, vanilla, half the syrup, and cinnamon. Pour the egg mixture over the bread, making sure it soaks in nice and even.

3. Wrap the entire dish in foil and place over the coals of a campfire or grill.

4. Allow to bake for 60 minutes or until the center is set and no longer jiggly.

How to Make a Tinfoil Packet

  • Cut two pieces of aluminum foil large enough to cover the entire meal (about 12″). Layer them one on top of the other. Optional: spray the interior with nonstick spray or line with parchment paper.
  • Place recipe ingredients in the center. Bring up the longer edges of the foil and fold together. Grasp one end and roll it up, repeating with the other end.
  • Alternatively, foil pie plates may be used to cook foil packet meals. Simply place the recipe ingredients into the pie plate and cover with aluminum foil before cooking.
  • For best results, cook the foil packet on a grill over the open fire.
  • Use caution when handling the foil packet, as it can become hot while cooking.

Tips and Tricks

  • Wrap foil tight but leave a little room inside the packet for steam to work its magic.
  • Make individual servings in smaller foil packets for picky eaters or little hands.
  • Prep everything at home and store it in an airtight container in your cooler.
  • To avoid burning the French toast, cook over indirect heat if your fireโ€™s a bit wild.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this ahead of time?
Absolutely! Prep the ingredients at home, pop them in an airtight container, and keep them chilled in your cooler until you’re ready to cook.

How do I keep the bottom from burning over the campfire?
Place your foil packet on a grill grate or over indirect heat instead of directly on hot coals. It helps everything cook more evenly and keeps it from getting scorched.

What kind of bread is best for French toast foil packets?
Stick with thick slices of bread like French bread, brioche, or Texas toast. They hold their shape and soak up the custard without turning to mush.
