Tips and Tricks

  • These steak and potato foil packets may be cooked in the oven or on the grill. The directions in the recipe card below are for baking in the oven. If you would prefer grilling, simply preheat the grill to 400 degrees and cook for 8-10 minutes.
  • The packets can be placed on a baking sheet to prevent them from leaking in the oven.
  • You can also cook them over the open fire on a grate over medium heat. Use heavy-duty foil if you are worried about the aluminum tearing.
  • Raw potatoes take a while to cook, so if you are planning to put them into the packet like we do, be sure to precook them first.
  • โ€‹Transfer any leftovers to an airtight container to keep in the fridge for a few days.

How Do You Fold a Foil Packet?

  • For the best results, start by pulling the top and bottom of the aluminum foil to meet in the center over the ingredients.
  • Fold the two edges together tightly along the entire length โ€” a 1″ fold is ideal.
  • Finally, the easiest way to seal the ingredients in is to roll up the ends of the foil to create a packet.

The secret ingredient to making the most flavorful and tender steak is our homemade steak garlic butter sauce. We like to use lots of garlic โ€” fresh cloves are best!

Simply combine butter, garlic, chives, and salt in a small bowl before adding to the top of the steaks. Plain, salted butter could also be used in this recipe, but this homemade garlic butter kicks it up a notch!
