How to Make a Tinfoil Packet
- Cut two pieces of aluminum foil to about 12″. Layer them one on top of the other. Optional: spray the interior with non-stick spray or line with parchment paper.
- Place recipe ingredients in the center. Bring up the longer edges of the foil and fold together. Grasp one end and roll it up, repeating with the other end.
- Alternatively, foil pie plates may be used to cook foil packet meals. Simply place the recipe ingredients into the pie plate and cover with aluminum foil before cooking.
- For best results, cook the foil packet on a grill over the open fire.
- Use caution when handling the foil packet, as it can become hot while cooking.

Tips For Camping Meal Preparation
- Prepare meals in advance at home whenever possible.ย Leave most of the mess at home, where running water is more accessible and cleanup is easier โ trust me on this one!
- Create “one-pot” family-style meals for quick dinners that don’t require a lot of thought.
- Use tinfoil packets, foil pie pans, or camp cookers.ย These tools help to make cleanup a breeze!
- Pack ingredients in 1-gallon-sized freezer bags for flexible storage in small fridges and coolers.
- Plan meals that use similar ingredients to help make packing and planning easy.ย Theseย cheesy vegetable campfire dip,ย loaded campfire potatoes, andย tinfoil packet nacho dipย recipes are some of our favorites.
- Use my blank printable meal plan or camping meal plans to help organize your next trip.

I love camping meals that require very little preparation and taste this delicious! My biggest tip for camping is to do as much of the prep work at home as you can.
It’s easier to clean up the mess at home than when you’re working in an outdoor kitchen, tenting it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you cook baked potatoes in foil over a campfire?
Absolutely! Wrapping potatoes in foil helps them cook evenly and keeps all that moisture locked in while they roast perfectly over the fire.
How long do foil packet potatoes take to cook?
Typically about 20โ30 minutes over a medium campfire or grill, depending on the size of your potatoes and how hot your fire is.
Should you pre-cook potatoes before camping?
Yes, if you want to save time! Pre-baking them at home and finishing them over the fire is a total game-changer โ especially with hungry teens!
Do you need to poke holes in potatoes before wrapping in foil?
Itโs a good idea! Poking a few holes allows steam to escape and helps prevent the potatoes from bursting while cooking.
What else can you add to loaded baked potatoes?
Pretty much anything your crew loves โ think cooked ground beef, sautรฉed veggies, jalapeรฑos, or even a drizzle of ranch dressing for extra flavor.

So happy to have found your blog! So many pinterest camping ideas lead to blogs where they say “we don’t camp much… but this seems like a good idea?” so it’s very nice to find a blog where the author actually camps. Anyway, we are vegetarian and I’ve made similar baked potato dinners but we use sweet potatoes and top with a black bean / bell pepper / mushroom topping with taco seasoning and sour cream. SO yum!
