Tips For Cooking With Cast Iron
- When cooking with cast iron, be sure to season the surface first.
- Always use gloves or oven mitts while cooking, as the surface of the iron will be hot.
- Cook the recipe over an open fire using hot coals, not open flames. A fire that is too hot will burn the outside of your recipe and not cook the inside.
- Be sure to clean the cast iron with a rough vegetable scrubber, rinse, and dry thoroughly before storing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make this taco skillet ahead of time for camping?
Absolutely! Cook and season the ground beef at home, then store it in a sealed bag in your cooler. When you’re ready, just heat everything in the skillet.
What can I use instead of ground beef?
Ground turkey, chicken, or even plant-based meat alternatives work great here. Itโs super flexible depending on what you have on hand.
How do I keep my taco skillet from burning over the campfire?
Stick to hot coals instead of open flames. Cast iron holds heat really well, so a steady, moderate heat cooks everything evenly without burning.
Can I add extra ingredients to this recipe?
Yes! Black beans, corn, diced peppers, or onions are all delicious additions that bulk up the meal and add even more flavor.
Whatโs the best way to store leftovers while camping?
Store leftovers in an airtight container in your cooler and reheat them the next day in your skillet.
